Power Transformer Diagnostics with PD Acoustic Emission Detection

Power Transformer diagnostics is a form of preventive maintenance in which all aspects of the transformer from the windings, core, bushing, insulation, to the tap changer are inspected.

Various tests are carried out of which measurement of ultrasonic activity of transformers – electrical method, Dynamic resistance measurement (DV test) of transformers with on-load tap changer (OLTC), and Testing of on-load tap changer (OLTC).

PD acoustic emission detection is used to locate discharges (PD), bad contacts or localized hot regions in transformers (> 200⁰C). Acoustics Emission (AE) method enables:

location of the source of potential problem on-site

assess the option for its elimination,

assess risks of running problematic transformers
