🌐 Driving Change: A Panel Discussion on Cold Chain Energy Efficiency Last month, I had the honor of moderating a panel that addressed a critical aspect of our future: energy efficiency in cold chain 🌿⚡ The focus was on: 1. Policy Frameworks: What role can governments play in incentivizing energy-efficiency across the cold chain? We discussed labeling programs for cold chain equipment and inclusion of cold storage under PAT program –being considered by BEE. 2. The Role of Civil Society: We explored how civil society organizations can support evidence based policy making and their implementation. 3. Industry’s Part: The discussion highlighted the initiatives being pursued by cold chain equipment manufacturing industry and support needed from other stakeholders. 4. Low Hanging Opportunities: We identified immediate, actionable steps that can be taken to save energy in cold storages, which are often overlooked yet have significant impact. 5. Human capital needs: Where we stand, and specific skilling that our workforce needs? 🌟 It was inspiring to see professionals come together to discuss opportunities in this space. Now that humble 🍅 tomato 🍅 has become as precious as gold, cold chain infrastructure has received much needed attention in the country. Post crisis everyone agrees that integrated cold chains can be the solution, however I would like to advocate for one additional feature – “Energy Efficient”. Last month, I had the privilege of speaking on the very same topic at Asia Clean Energy Forum (ACEF) 2023, organized by Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Manilla. I contributed to the forum by sharing my thoughts on "Energy Efficiency Policy Measures for Cold Chain sector”. Sharing key highlights from the talk: 😥 Access to cold chain is still a challenge in India. Only 4% of the country’s produce benefits from cold-chain, hardly 1% of India's horticulture produce is exported. Optimist would see that there is massive growth waiting to be unlocked 🛠 We need to develop innovative business and financial models to address above gap. 🚨 India’s cold chain infrastructure is growing rapidly; if we don’t act now; inefficient infrastructure may get created and locked-in, straining our energy system in the years to come  ❄️ Energy efficient cold chains not only will reduce food loss, but also can create a positive ecological / environmental impact and directly impact and enhance farmers’ income 🎯 Few of the cold chain equipment are amendable for inclusion under Standards and Labelling (S&L) program. ❓ India has a significant number of cold storages which rely on outdated & inefficient technologies as well as operating practices. We quickly need to find a way to address the issue.

#Late post Earlier this month, I had the privilege to contribute to policy discourse on India Cooling Action Plan (#ICAP). I shared my thoughts on the role Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) can play in Accelerating the implementation of #ICAP, during a workshop jointly organized by BEE and CLASP.   Responding to various questions, during a panel discussion I made case for enhancing communication with end users of cooling solutions, by: 1.     Improving availability of energy efficiency best practices, operation, and maintenance guidelines in local languages. This is specifically needed for last mile cold chain solutions being used by farmers and front-line workers. 2.     Finding ways to showcase monetary benefits of using efficient (star labelled) appliances to effect positive consumer behaviour. This could be done by including an QR code along with star label, which a user can scan to know more about energy savings offered by specific appliance. Furthermore, we should start integrating elements of behaviour science to drive energy efficiency among end users (i.e., social comparison with peers).
