Meros has been working on a number of projects related to the Japanese alcohol sector (and we are known for our enthusiastic collecting of craft gin). The data below reflects what we have seen- an overall decrease in alcohol consumption in Japan over the past several decades, but with growth in several sectors, including whiskey. A key driver has been the strong marketing and popularity of the highball( whiskey and soda). The highball growth is partly due to Suntory’s marketing but the appeal is a drink that is not sweet, is lower calorie and goes well with food.
