Characterization of two in vivo challenge models to measure functional activity of monoclonal antibodies to Plasmodium falciparum circumsporozoite protein
Malaria Journal
Statistical analysis of the protection granted by two monoclonal antibodies agains the malaria parasite provide guidance regarding selection of the appropriate experimental design, dose selection, and group sizes.
-
Optimization of an in vivo model to study immunity to Plasmodium falciparum pre-erythrocytic stages
Malaria Journal
The protective effect of vaccines or monoclonal antibodies targeting the human malaria parasite prior to blood stage infection can be measured using a mouse malaria parasite expressing the surface antigen of the human parasite that also expresses luciferase and GFP. This allows for much faster and more precise measurements of liver stage infection than previous assays.

A mevalonate bypass system facilitates elucidation of plastid biology in malaria parasites
PLOS Pathogens
Genetically knocking in a metabolic bypass to essential biochemistry in the malaria parasite allows investigation of crucial biochemical pathways to reveal new drug targets.
-
Using Lipoamidase as a Novel Probe To Interrogate the Importance of Lipoylation in Plasmodium falciparum
mBio
Using a bacterially derived lipoamidase, we determined that attachment of a small molecule named lipoate is crucial for the mitochondrion of the malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum. These insights open the door to drug targeting novel pathways the parasite needs for this lipoate attachment.

Host biotin is required for liver stage development in malaria parasites
Proceedings of the National Academies of Science
Gene knockouts in both the human and mouse malaria models demonstrate that the malaria parasite needs the biotin cofactor during the liver stage of infection, but not during the other developmental stages.

Centrosomal kinase Nek2 cooperates with oncogenic pathways to promote metastasis
Nature Oncogenesis
Overexpression of dNek2 in Drosophila melanogaster and hNek2 in human cell lines results in downstream upregulation of various mitogenic genes. Inhibition of either PI3PK or direct inhibition of Nek2 abrogates these phenotypes.
