[LG TV HDMI connection] I want to connect a set-top box to my smart TV

Troubleshooting

Details regarding settings may vary depending on the model.
Refer to the User’s Guide provided at Customer Support in the LG Electronics website.

➔ Preparing a set-top box

  • You must have signed up a service provider in order to use IPTV and the set-top box.
  • Internet and power must be connected to the set-top box.
  • In addition to the basic preparations, if any problems related to the set-top box arise, contact your service provider.

➔ Preparing for TV connection

  • For WebOS4.5 in 2018 or earlier models, universal remote control settings through device connection may be necessary.
    ※ Models purchased directly from overseas may not support the universal remote control.
  • Universal remote control settings are possible only when a network connection is made.

1. Turn off the power and check the location of the external input HDMI port on the TV.

TV Settings

By registering the set-top box to the AI remote control (magic remote control) and setting the universal remote control function, you can control the TV and set-top box simultaneously with one AI remote control.
From webOS4.5 in 2019 and later versions, when a set-top box is connected to the HDMI terminal, universal remote control is set automatically.
If automatic setting is not done, you can set the universal remote control from the Settings menu.
Use the AI remote control to set the universal remote control function according to the order displayed on the TV.

Setting the universal remote control in [2019 WebOS4.5] or earlier models

➔ Move to the [Universal remote control settings] screen and set according to the guide.

1. Press the [External Input] button on the AI remote control, and, on the smart TV monitor screen, Select the input mode that corresponds to the HDMI port number to which the set-top box is connected.
Pressing the device connenctor button over the input mode selection window will open the universal remote control settings window.

2. When the [Integrated Remote Control Settings] screen appears, make sure that your set-top box is positioned properly without any obstructions blocking the signal reception.
Then, proceed by selecting [Next].

3. Select [Set-top Box] from the external device list and then press [Next].

4. Select the HDMI port to which your set-top box is connected and press the [Next] button.

5. Check if the address displayed on the screen is correct and select [Next].
If the locale information is not correct, select [Change Locale] to edit the details.

6. Select your set-top service provider and press [Next].
If your service provider is not on the list, select [More] to display additional service providers and select your provider.

7. Select [Next] to proceed to the [Test Remote Control] screen to test the integrated remote control functions.

8. Press the [Test] button on the screen and check if the set-top box screen on the right is working properly.
If the set-top box screen works properly, press [Yes] to proceed to the next screen.

9. On the [Device Settings Summary] screen, check the information you have configured and press the [Finish] button.

Setting the universal remote control automatically

Setting the universal remote control automatically by WebOS

[2020 WebOS5.0] Press the setting button on the remote control and select [All Settings] → [Connection] → [Device Connection Settings] → [Automatic Device Settings].

[2019 WebOS4.5] Press the setting button on the remote control and select [All Settings] → [Connection] → [HDMI Device Connection Settings] → [Automatic Device Settings].

1. After turning on the TV, press the [Settings] button on the remote control.
From [Settings], select [All Settings].

2. From [Connection], select [HDMI Device Connection Settings].

3. Turn on [Automatic Device Setting].

4. Connecting the set-top box to the HDMI terminal will automatically set the universal remote control.
Once the universal remote control is set, a notification saying “Universal remote control setting is complete” will appear on the top right corner of the screen.

※ From the year 2021 and webOS6.0 and after, turning on/off the Automatic Device Setting will not be provided.
If automatic setting fails, refer to the section Setting Universal Remote Control.
