I think as a conversion it is good for the most part, but could have been improved graphically and with better scrolling/framerate. It is a fun game, with a cute character as the protagonist. The difficulty does ramp up around Level 4 onwards and with no continues or passwords, it makes for a difficult game. Level 5-4 is especially difficult, as you have to do many precarious jumps. These jumps are particularly difficult as you tend to slide into spikes, where you have to restart the entire level, or if you are lucky drop down and have to restart the jumping sequence again. It is the only level this happens on, but it is a shame the developers had to resort to such tactics. Overall a fairly solid 7/10 from me, a pleasant game which is challenging, but also has enough gameplay to make it enjoyable regardless of your skill level.

It's an humble conversion that feels a bit jerky and small compared to the original and way below what the Amiga is capable of, but retains the pleasant gameplay.

Taito was really great at making platform games that would drain a lot of coins from player's pocket with their addictive playability and cute graphics and sounds. The Newzealand Story keeps intact this formula, even though it is less memorable than other titles from the same company. The Amiga rendition, while by no means arcade-perfect both technically and gameplay wise, retains the spirit of the game and that's probably why it is still revered. On the downside no continues or passwords are provided, so the point in translating coin-ops to home systems is completely missed. Nonetheless, a slightly above average platfomer (6/10).

I love this game. I love the character, and the enemies. A cute chick pretending to be a kiwi with a bow and arrow and an infinite arsenal of arrows. I really love the flying machines, and the way that if you jump at an enemy that's already riding one, you sort of push them off to their doom and take over the controls. I have two complaints though. The end of level bosses are plain rubbish, and I think the game would have been better off without them. The second is the music. The main tune is very catchy and sounds great up to a point, but it never changes. It keeps on and on and on until you choose not to listen to it anymore and put on a cassette tape or maybe one of those new indestructible compact discs that play music nowadays. Regardless of the complaints though, this is more than a worthwhile buy. The character is as iconic as they come and the controls are superb. This game delivers an arrow to the heart, in true kiwi style.

I would rate rainbow island just a little better because of the more progressive difficulty ans rick dangerous for the originality, but after those 2 it's the funniest plateformer.

I got this as part of the Batman pack on my Amiga so was one of the first games I ever played on it and I like it a lot. Nothing spectacular but it does exactly what it says on the tin and plays very well.

Good game all in all 7/10

No matter what true classic fans will say, I hate this game. Full of absurd with ridiculous gameplay and limited playfield. Music is irritating as hell. Maybe the conversion is nicely done but in overall I rate this game as very poor.

I like it although everyone else around me hated it back then ...

I think I'll never get why ...

A classic with a decent difficulty setting.

Runs supersmooth with a Supra28 equipped 500.

Eh! Wadda ya know?! Another nice arcade conversion! There are a few out there after all. I really liked this one, for it's almost a carbon copy of the arcade and it's much better than the previous Spectrum version that I owned. Had only one small bugging issue with this one: the ever-present "up for jump".

I'll never forget this one.
It's a platformer where the hero had actually some cool skills:
shooting, "flying", spitting water, pushing enemies of their flying contraptions and using it for himself....etc

This (in my humble opinion) was a very advanced platformer hidden under a graphical coat of cuteness!!!!

I remember beeing a kid having a C64 and watching this at my mates house where his father was playing this.... The silence.... I can still remember it.
I knew I then I had to have an atari and play it....time whent by...and I got an amiga...I never could finish it (shame on me) it was to difficult at the time for me...

I will certainly go back for this one as it is one of the few platformers which holds still now while 2012 is nearing...and years after that.

I don't get why The Newzealand Story gets so much praise on Lemon Amiga. Is it because it was one of the very first games people played? Or is it because it was comparatively good at the time of its release? I've played it not too long ago and think it is a decent platformer. I still don't get the exuberant comments.

I will be the first to write the word ST here. Straight port, but looks like the Ocean guys learned the Atari very well. It's one of the best conversions even though it's in 16 colors and obviously not taking advantage of Amiga's Blitter chip or hardware scrolling.

I just played this again after a couple years or so, on my crooked laptop and using the arrow and Ctrl keys--rather difficult that way. So--what to say?
Cute game, cute music--though a little repetitive. Overall, likeable.

Great little platformer, quick loading times, ok graphics, ok music and great controls. The only problem I have with this it's a rather difficult game, and I knew a lot of people used the infinite lives to play this, 2 just isn't enough

Pretty fun, and the kiwi characters are cute. There's a nice range of weaponry and means of transport in the game, which makes the gameplay so much better.

Apparently this game was overrated at the time? Well, I personally heard nothing about it at all until my dad came home with the game one day. So I basically didn't know what to expect. I didn't play this a whole lot, but I got into it for a while and found it to be very enjoyable.

Difficult, though. You don't get much time to complete each level, and some of them are quite complicated. I used to always use the infinite lives cheat because it was the only way I could ever completely explore some of the bigger levels.

"motherfuckenkiwibastard" (no G) was the cheat for the version I had of this. It's sad I remember that all these years later, but the game itself is a classic. I even preferred this over the arcade version. Good stuff.

Overrated, even at the time. I remember wanting this so badly, but when I finally got my friend to lend it to me I was so disappointed I took it straight back to him. Boring shooty platformy rubbish.

Quite a bizzare story for this game: a little chicken with bow and arrows are going to save his(?) siblings(?) who were kidnapped by a giant walrus???

Fine platform shooter from golden years of gaming. Cute characters (mainly kiwi), single but jolly tune and many levels of fun with bombs, animal riding and swimming. Join the fun. Too bad Ican't make it work on winuae, could you help?

A really, really good conversion from the arcade version - only missing the 'heaven' sublevels, a handful of warps and a few enemy sprites. Definitely worth a play, and it's miles better than the PC Engine conversion.

Zzap! Had this competition in which you were supposed to draw a Kiwi (you could win the actual coin-op)... I entered (all the way from Finland), and I'm sure that they all laughed at my lousy drawing. What else? Oh yes, it's a good game!

A spot on arcade port, New Zealand Story was a brilliant platformer with sickeningly cute sprites. Who couldn't love the little yellow kiwi? NZS is also one of those rare occasions when C64 and Amiga versions of the same game were about as good. And now I can remember the music too! Oh no !

Probably my fave game ever, both in the arcades and on the Amy. The conversion was excellent, even if it suffered a bit from being ported over directly from the ST, and well, the game itself... A pure masterpiece, absolutely awesome. A true classic.

The graphics and sound are average, and the scrolling's all juddery, and there's quite a few bits missing from the arcade machine.... Like the heaven rounds and some graphic effects. But none of that prevents this from being an amazing conversion which is one of the best - if not THE best - platform game on the Amiga. The gameplay is nigh on identical to the arcade, and everything's been converted so well that you don't really notice the bits they left out. My only real gripe is that it's an ST port - things like the dodgy scrolling could have been fixed had this been written specifically for the Amiga - but it's still fantastic to play and that's what counts. 10/10.

I hired this game out when it was released.. I thought it was brilliant - so tried everything I could to beat Rob Northerns copyprotection scheme - sadly I failed.

So I bought it

Classic example of a cutesy platformer that blew Nintendos Mario games out of the water.

The original release had a built in cheat mode - type in "m*therf*ckingk*wib*stard" to activate - although they changed this to something else in later releases (I wonder why?).
