If quality is measured by number of floppy disks, this must be 2 1/2 times better than the original since it comes on 11 disks rather than the 4 of the original.

But seriously... Is it better than the original? Ehhh.... It's hard to say. It's more ambitious, with far more locations, more characters, more puzzles....

Sadly the Amiga version doesn't have the full iMuse system as found on the PC, and that's really missed. It's also more... Adult in places compared to the original. Perhaps this reflects Guybrush aging, or perhaps the developers wanted to try and appeal to older gamers.

It's still great through, and anybody who's played the first must play the second. There's a reason most retrospectives consider them as an inseparable pair.

Although, there is one puzzle which stops it from being perfect, and the developers at least acknowledge it.

... Monkey wrench.

My favorite game ever in this life. It runs greatly on Amiga 1200 with WHDLOAD. The only disadvantage is that it misses a lot of music. It has fewer colors than PC and Mac versions but the eye gets used to it.

One of the last games I played on my Amiga before switching to a PC. It was very enjoyable (though not as good as part I).

Btw: I played it on hardcore mode - two disc drives.

I'm just gonna start by saying, HDD install was needed I couldn't imagine playing this disk swap.

For me this game was slightly better then MI1, it improved everything including visuals and sound design. The puzzles were more memorable and were more logical too none of that sierra moon logic.

If I had to complain about anything it'd be that not enough new characters but that's forgivable as the old characters got used in new ways alot of the time.

I do look at the score here and it's 8.9. Which is understandable if you compare it to the first part of the series. Understandable! Pretty much same crew, similar style, similar humour. If you give the first part a 10 it feels unfair to give this one a worse rating. It's not just the number of disks (and loading time) which tripled if you don't have a HDD (SSD?) or emulator. The graphics, dialogue and story are top notch again, at least if you liked Monkey island 1. Some puzzles are hard, but after all this is why you probably play the game. Unlike Monkey Island 1 this part is not really groundbreaking, but they tried to further improve pretty much every aspect of the first game. If you think a 2 in the title should automatically deduct some point make it less - but to me this is a 10. Definitely a "must have adventure".

Had me up till 7am one night during the Christmas holidays in 1992! Since then I've gone rather cold on point and click adventures. Most I've tried more recently (mostly early-mid 90s titles on the PC) I've got stuck on right from the start and just got bored, frustrated and given up. I particularly disliked "Beneath a Steel Sky" and "Lure of the Temptress" for such reasons.

I'd probably still quite like Monkey Island 2 though even today.

Overrated game if you ask me. Yeah it was pretty good with a good storyline but I didn't find it amazingly funny, only moderately so.
But the biggest flaw was its rather poor implementation on the Amiga with jerky scrolling and animation, its slowness, very very sparse sound and a long wait to load up to even start. All evidence of thoughtless and sloppy programming.
Despite being good game designers Lucasfilm didn't know how to utilise the Amiga properly to get the best results.
Ocean's Hook was considerably better aesthetically and used the Amiga properly.
I'll give Monkey Island 2 7/10 but no more than that cos I didn't like the slowness and jerkiness and the lack of sound.

Another great adventure game if not the greatest of that times. Naturally the Amiga port was not the best one but it was acceptable - in particular when you had a hard drive or at least second floppy drive. However, in adventure games this is the story and the riddles that are one of the most important factors. In this departament the game is absolutly fabulous. Clever (in a way) and humorous conversations also make that this game is highly enjoyable and make you want to see the end.

This Amiga port was okay at the time. We didn't get the transitional iMUSE music system, lost some sound effects, had to do without parallax scrolling, and saw the environments on the islands of Monkey Island 2 rendered with less colors, but still, it was an enjoyable adventure, provided you had a hard drive to enjoy it properly. Nowadays, I would prefer to play one of the enhanced re-releases.

Oh, adventure in top of amiga games? No matter how funny do you think it is. I'll never forget how funny was to juggle with 11 disks to play point & click "try everything to everything" game with tens of commands.

Amiga has dozens of much better typically "amiga games" to be adored. Not this one, despite it's good one.

I think this game does not deserve to be among the top 50 best Amiga games because it was missing lots of content (most of the music and also sound effects and parallax layers and even color cycles for water effect) due to Amiga's not having high density floppy drives (and hard drives) as standard.

Although it claims to be playable without a hard disk installation (and technically it is), the truth is that this is virtually useless via disks with the exceedingly long loading times and the incommensurable amount of disk swapping. Get a hard disk, though, and it ascends to computer gaming legend. This is a worthy sequel to one of the best games that ever graced the Amiga and is, itself, a piece of software history.

Via disks: 0/20
Via HD installation: 20/20

Nicely converted graphics, great music (Bone Song!) and gameplay that doesn't really get much better that this - great puzzles, no deadends, no dying, restoring, starting over etc.
Overall great sequel but ending was sort of disappointing, not only for me as I see browsing the comments.

The sense of freewheeling Caribbean travel is so outstanding, one feels arguably transposed to an immersive sandbox title. The first exploration of MI2's islands is instantly breathtaking, so infectious, one cannot help taking the ride again and again. Over the years, the beloved MI characters have become vertiable friends that transcend the overarching narrative of Ron Gilbert's planned trilogy. Booting this game is akin to meeting old buddies. And although the game certainly hasn't changed over the years, itnever ceases to tickle that investigative strain that makes one saviour the lush settings in search of something rather rare in gaming: the hugely satisfactory realisation that magic is at work.

I played this one about 2 years ago and really enjoyed it! It had a warm feeling to it. I was quite miffed though, that I couldn't' get through the last maze [L 2 3 4, R 2 3 4, ect.] because I saved/re-saved one game over an older one so I gave up[!] Oh well. Fun while it lasted, time well spent. Maybe someday...

I've recently completed the PC remake of this game, and its sure fun to play again. I love the fact you can switch back to the oldskool graphics and sound at any time.

It could have been better than part 1 but in the end I still like part 1 better.

This doesn't mean, however, that this is a bad game - FAR from it. It's one of the best adventure games ever!

The best version is on PC though, with beautiful VGA graphics and awesome MIDI music (utilizing the famous iMuse system to its fullest).

Oh, and there's also a remake on steam.

I believe this point 'n click adventure to have surpassed the first games'
greatness.

The character of the people in the world, the dialogue,
humour, puzzles, all seem to come together possibly better
than any point 'n click before it.

It's on my top100 games of all time list for a damn good reason.

I soooo miss these great games... Ones where the story was compelling the characters had charm and whit. I think the fact that sooooo many ppl went through all the effort of the disk swapping to play this is a estimate alone to how good it was.... Could you imagine any games doing that today and still get an awesome review?

Funny how nobody seems to mention the iMuse sound that sadly wasn't included on the amiga port. It was in fact one of the stong-points of the pc version. It fluently & melodically blended the music from one screen to the other without any interruptions. A very nice touch providing you with an almost non stop in-game soundtrack and thus adding quite a lot to the game's atmosphere. Compared to the pc version and even to monkey island 1 on the amiga i find this version of monkey 2 too 'silent', both on music and sound effects.
it's a shame they never did an AGA version, so the graphics shouldn't have been downgraded.

apart from all this, the game still remains outstanding.

Truly amazing. Quite simply one of the greatest games out there.

As Guybrush Threepwood would say, "Nice game."

The graphics are quite stunning for the game's time, and the musical score is excellent. Musically, this game set the standard for many other LucasArts games that followed shortly. The storyline is exciting and interesting, even if the ending is a little... Strange.

And as for the gameplay? Well it doesn't get much better than this, really. This game contains some of my favourite adventure puzzles of all time. For example, in one part of the game you get to run around a mansion in a frilly purple dress while being chased by a furious cook holding a dangerous-looking meat cleaver. Another puzzle involves following a sequence given to you by two skeletons singing it to you via The Bone Song.

There really isn't a dull moment in this game. Some of the puzzles took me a while to figure out, but I was never even close to giving up, because it's all so entertaining. It's pretty close, but I think I prefer this one to the original, just because of a few certain puzzles.

And because of the great humour, it is very replayable. Maybe not a classic in the Amiga world, but certainly a classic in the gaming world.

MI2 is better than MI, more complex, in every aspect. Still, i voted MI a 10/10 and MI2 a 9/10. This is because the Amiga version with its 11 disks was largely unplayable, even if you had an external drive. Sure, with an HD that would have been perfect, but the Amiga was no Pc

Long adventure, greatest plot and setting ever, gfx over the standards, familiar characters... Unbeatable. As for many PC conversions, I preferred the Amiga gfx. Less colours, but with the scanlines of the PAL monitor everything looked MUCH better than the 320x200 resolution on VGA screens.

To me, this was about the most anyone ever got out of the Amiga's capablities. Sure it came on 12 discs and that was annoying (especially in retrospect, given HD capabilities these days) but I don't think I've ever felt such a sense of accomplishment in completing just one of its many challenges ever since.

Honest, the second half, after you got the treasure map, wasn't that good. It was even boring somehow. C'mon people, this is a Pc conversion, and the Pc version was better. I can understand it was a good game, but I cant believe it's the only game togheter with the first episode to have a vote superior to 9. There are a lot of true classic Amiga games that deserve it.

It's a shame for the Amiga, who have it's own genre of games in my opinion. But this is not a classic Amiga. Im so sad

Monkey Island 2 is very much a game of two halves.

There's the half where you're playing the game, laughing yourself stupid at the excellent jokes, falling in love again with the returning characters from the first game and racking your brain over the well thought out, logical puzzles.

Then there's the half where you're staring in frustration at loading screens and endlessly juggling the game's ELEVEN floppies.

Put simply, the team tasked with creating the Amiga version of Monkey 2 were much more interested in making a perfect port of the PC version than they were in making sure the game would be playable for the majority of Amiga owners. PCs come with hard drives as standard, whereas most Amigas didn't. Add to that the fact that even small external HDs cost a fortune and it was clear that a significant proportion of Amiga owners were going to have little choice but to play this direct from floppy. Really, the lower-end Amigas needed a cut down version of the game in order for it to be playable, but that's not what they got.

It's not all bad news though - the game is every bit as packed with character and fun as the first, has a much more expansive range of locations and an involving plot. If you were one of the lucky few playing it from a HD it would be a 10/10 game easily, but for the vast majority who couldn't then that has to be taken into account when scoring.

8/10

I have to disagree with zOOmba on this one. Technically this game blew me away when I first saw it. It looks much cleaner & crisper than its predecessor yet it still holds all its charisma & charm. The graphics actually incorporate some hand drawn backgrounds this time around & are truly stunning because of it. The story is just as funny as Monkey Island 1 & all the puzzles are back again. I did find the puzzles to be a little bit more obscure on this game compared to the last one but I think the designers expect you to have played the prequel first & I feel they wanted to add a little bit more of a challenge to those who have. The game does have an obscene amount of disks (11) & if you don't have any extra disk drives the constant swapping can be quite tiresome. On the up side though, the amount of disks does make this game considerably bigger than its predecessor & will last you much longer.

If you like your point n' click adventure games & you like a challenge, then they don't come any finer than this. It looks great, sounds great, plays great & it's tough. The way all games should be.

GRAPHICS 10/10
Bright & colourful with some beautifully hand drawn backgrounds & wonderfully animated characters.

SOUND 10/10
Absolutely superb!

PLAYABILITY 10/10
Top notch!

OVERALL 10/10
Ron Gilbert & co have done it again, a masterpiece!

Technicaly this is a not so good Amiga port of a PC game. The graphics certainly suffered from the transition. Music is pretty good tho. The game is a bit slow (like it's predecessor) but that's not really ruins it.

The game now: I really think this one is "too much" and lot less fun that the first episode. Enigmas are even more unlogical than before and there is too much of them, silly jokes are too much... Nah I think the first episode was very, very much better than this one.

Not a bad game at all, but never it cames close to the perfection of it's older brother.

The first game I 'bought' from LA. It was so disappointing... It was like watching a Police Academy sequel. Flat jokes, dirty converted graphics and a bumpy rhythm. The previous games did have a more abstract presence. This was TOO well drawn. Exept of Dott, I didn't like any game from that company called 'Lucasarts'. The 'Lucasfilm Games'-days were the best. In my opinion this is the greatest game ever made. For the time it was suddenly like seeing videogames in colour. When I first played this it was as if I had never been taken away by a videogame before. I continued to enjoy every minute of the adventure until the end, which was sad. Not that I think it was bad, It just showed that that was the end of Monkey Island in the Creator "Ron Gilberts" eyes, I was 12 going on 13 when I first played this, I remember writing a letter to Lucas Arts begging for more lol. Personally adventure didn't get any better than this it was like interacting with a brilliant book. The sequel on the P.C carried on the magic but without Ron writing it fell a little. The 4th is a 3D game and it ruins it all a bit.

This and its predecessor are the two best 2D adventure games ever made. You wont even care about the disc swapping involved in this 11 disc monster as the game is so darn good. It is almost as good as part one but this would only get 98% whilst part one would get 99%. This and the first one should be in your disc box go and buy them both now.
after this Lucasarts slid down a slippery slope in quality parts 3 and 4 of the series are rubbish thankfully the Amiga wasn't tarnished by those releases, however these two will be forever all-time Amiga Classics.

I am a big fan of The first Monkey Island. Together with Zak MacKracken I think this is the best and most original adventure out there. In my Amiga-days I never got the chance to play this sequel, so I did that a few months ago. I was a little bit disappointed I must say. While going through the game I often had the feeling that this game was a bit forced and used the success of the first one. The story didn't captivate me as much as the first MI. Just looking at the game as it is, this is a very good product. Graphically very nice and sonically good (although the music isn't as brilliant as the first one!). So in my opinion it just is inferior to the original, but my opinion was already clear, I guess... And THAT is the point! You automatically compare it with the original and either you think it's an improvement, just as good, or you are a little (or more) disappointed... And I am in the last group sadly. But in comparison with the sequels after this, MI2 is a shining diamond!

Graphics: 9/10
Sound: 8/10
Playability: 10/10

Many people love Monkey Island 2 but I prefer its predecessor. Secret of Monkey Island was genuinely fun, crazy, imaginative and original. The sequel is that to some extent but at the same time it feels forced. It's more a product than something you would make from your heart. Oh, and I really hated the ending. It was tacky. Amiga version is okay - as long as you have a hard disk since disk swapping was painful to your wrists.

This is my all time favourite game. I just loved it so much that I used to dream to be Guybrush, fighting against Le Chuck. Superb soundtracks, superb character design, superb atmosphere!!! I still have got a cassette where I recorded the songs of this masterpiece, becuase they're awesome! The disk swapping was annoying but it is nothing compared to the quality of the game. It wasn't so easy, cause of the -not so sensed- puzzles but funny as hell!! Surprising ending, once you'll finish it you'll replay it again and again. It is the only adventure that can beat the prequel, I wish they could make a movie about this saga (that counts, for me, only the first 2 real episodes). Long live Ron Gilbert.

I just love this excellent adventure. It has a wonderful story and atmosphere still is unsurpassed. One of the best games ever.

Adventure gaming at it's best. And the care taken in adapting the 256 colour graphics to the Amiga really shows. Why couldn't Sierra get off their butts and make their games look this good?

Either way, a lot of people, including me, thought the end was kind of lame. The rest totally makes up of it ofcourse. Still it's a classic which everyone should play (after completing Monkey Island 1). Excellent game, and follow up.

My favourite scene was the one in which Guybrush had to disguise with the pink skirt. Still wearing the beard, I couldn't keep myself from laughing anymore
And I actually liked the ending, too. It was really weird indeed, but extravagant and in any case damn unexpected. The transition from this ending to MI3 was silly though.

If you don't play this game then you'll never die, because you've never lived - 'nuff said!
Haplo - The game does not have a lame ending at all. Ron Gilbert (Designer) had plans for a third Monkey Island but Lucasarts went and made it with out him which is probably why you think the end is lame.

Even better than the first 'Monkey Island' game.
