A Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé senior signed his letter of intent to play baseball for a Washington college this week.

Garrett Bryant signed his letter of intent to play baseball for Columbia Basin College, located in Pasco, Washington, on Thursday, March 11, 2021.

“I feel really good about it. It’s a really good community and baseball team,” Bryant said in a phone interview. “I’m very excited to play for them.”

Bryant, a pitcher and outfielder by trade, will start at CBC in September, buoyed on by the support of coaches and family.

“With Garrett, I know this is one step in achieving his life goals,” said Bryant’s basketball coach at JDHS, Rob Casperson, in a phone interview. “He’s been working really hard to play college baseball. This is an opportunity, and I’m really excited for him.”

Bryant says he intends to study engineering as well as advancing his college baseball career at CBC.

“It’ll be nice, just being able to play more than 12 games in a season. They play like 30,” Bryant said. “I’m looking forward to getting more exposure to other scouts and being able to play different people and get more experience.”

Bryant got to this through hard work and talent and still has far to go, said Chad Bentz, the activities director at JDHS.

“I am very excited for Garrett and his opportunity to go play at the collegiate level,” Bentz said. “I look forward to seeing him progress as a student athlete.”

Bryant, who’s part of JDHS’ formidable basketball team, is looking to finish the school year with winning a basketball championship before heading to Pasco to start a new phase of his life.

“Pasco’s really small but if you drive a like a mile out you’re into the other cities,” Bryant said. “It’s like a tri-city. It’s not so big a city, but if you drive a bit there’s other stuff to do.”

Bryant thanked parents, Blair Ramsdell and Ronnie Bryant, as well as his coaches who supported him going to camps to hone his baseball skills, including coach Patrick Wuebben.
