“Kirby’s Triple Deluxe” will be the next title in the pink puffball’s series. Unfortunately, upon first glance, aside from some shiny new copy abilities, it seems there’s not a whole lot of “new” coming to kirby’s world. I feel they really had it right back in the days of Gameboy, SNES, and N64.

In Kirby’s Dreamland 2 for gameboy and Kirby’s Dreamland 3 for SNES (above), you could choose from one of several different animal friends to ride on and each would control differently with special abilities to help you swim faster, fly higher, or climb walls. You could even inhale an enemy while mounted to have your mount use the ability, making loads of combination powers to explore.

In Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, the game allowed you to inhale an enemy, let’s say a fire monster, and spit it out at a spike-type monster, creating a combination ability that you could inhale to become a bow that shoots flaming arrows! With seven base powers, The combinations were seemingly endless.

These days, the combo system has been long abandoned and kirby’s developers seem to be trying harder and harder to bring “new” and exciting elements of gameplay to kirby’s universe, but the games are just starting to lose flavor. What is this!? Bell Kirby? Is that an element? Is he going to shatter eardrums?

On the bright side, there’s a wide variety of powers in this new game, and with the 3DS’s graphics and capabilities, they look like they’ll be fun to try out. Plus I gotta say, after watching the videos on the japanese websiteKirby’s world looks like it will have a lot of interesting features and gimmicks to explore. One of them being the ability to become a rainbow and swallow entire trees out of the ground… hmm..

I just think Nintendo needs to go back to the original idea that made kirby games awesome. Discovering new combination powers and using the right ones to discover secrets in each level. Unless they decided that Kirby needs to be Nintendo’s new series for toddlers, I don’t see why the combo system was ever removed.
