Fashion Clothing Jeans & Denim Jennifer Lopez Wore a Pair of Jeans That Are So Controversial, I Did a Triple Take We just might see dirty jeans everywhere soon. InStyle's editorial guidelines Published on April 12, 2024 @ 11:00PM Photo: Backgrid I remember when I bought my first pair of distressed denim in my early teens. I thought it was the coolest thing — until my dad saw them and said, “You actually paid for those?” In my head, I thought, “Wait, you’re right…” I paid for pants with holes in them, when I could have just as easily DIY’d them with some scissors and sandpaper. But then, I chalked up my dad’s reaction to him being “too old” and not understanding what’s hip and on-trend at the moment. They were cool! Fast forward 15 years later, I found myself utterly flabbergasted at a recent celebrity denim sighting. At first, I was confused. Then, when I zoomed in, my jaw dropped — what I thought I had seen was, in fact, what was there. And it was something I never thought would happen in the denim world. But alas, it’s here, and people are bound to follow suit, especially given the fact the one and only Jennifer Lopez was the one who wore this upcoming, confusing denim trend. Lopez was photographed out on her usual New York City stroll, looking as calm and cool as ever. The singer slipped into her go-to Intimissimi cashmere turtleneck top (which my sister and I were just raving about). She rounded out the look with a navy blue top coat, mini Chanel bag in a poppy turquoise hue, oversized Gucci sunglasses, and those dirty designer jeans that made me do a triple take. And no, I’m not talking “dirty” like Christina Aguilera dirty (aka, sexy), but actually dirty, with dirt spots covering the denim. Coming in at $620, I can only imagine my dad’s reaction if I were to buy these and wear them; he would be so confused, just like me. But, if you look beyond the dirt-splattered wash, you’ll find some upcoming spring 2024 trends that are actually worth testing out — I certainly will be. The singer clearly has a thing for big, baggy denim; she’s worn the billowy silhouette more than I can count with two hands, which means she’s obsessed. Frankly, I am, too. This particular Acne pair had a super oversized fit and low-rise that looked oh-so-cool, but is also secretly comfy. We all know tight, constricting denim isn’t the thing these days, especially as we enter the warmer months; baggy options allow for ample airflow, making it all the more possible to wear jeans on a hot day. Into it! Lopez’s denim had a wash I’m just as curious about; while slightly dirty, of course, the jeans also had a slightly green, acid-y hue that harkens back to the early aughts, when this type of colorway was the coolest thing you could wear in middle school. While not dirty per se, the stark fading at the center of the leg made for an eye-catching pair. My advice? Pick your poison. Go big and baggy, go for a green fade, or combine the two for a super controversial pair that J.Lo would totally approve of.
