The Ambivalence Chronicles: a Sci-Fi Comedy in 8 Bits

And now for something completely different: The Chip Whisperer - Bit#1 of The Ambivalence Chronicles - is a science fiction comedy story by IRN's occasional Sinclair reviewer, Steve Trower, released as a kindle ebook. The Ambivalence Chronicles: a Sci-Fi Comedy in 8 Bits, is the retrogaming inspired, time-travelling, dimension-jumping tale of an ordinary retro collector who sets out to buy a ZX81 on eBay, and instead finds himself mixed up in the shady shenanigans of the mysterious Assembly of Newly Uplifted Systems.

It's been a big 18 months for the Amstrad community. Not only have we been treated to a plethora of great games, emulator updates and hardware mods; the much fabled GX4000 got it's own bit of retro-loving in the form of a flashcart, the C4CPC. Many 8 bit fans already to know of this, so here I take a look at this really neat bit of kit, show you the ropes (Roland style of course) and even take a look at the 3D printed case you can create for it. One of the must-own modifications for Amstrad fans in Novabug's book.

Pinball Dreams CPC Preview - Is the Amstrad port preview of an Amiga classic any good?

Amiga simulation classic Pinball Dreams has made the jump to Amstrad CPC in spectacular fashion. This is an early preview of what we hope will be a complete game, brought to us by the impressive Batman Group (responsible for the Batman Forever demo). For the meanwhile, we have the delights of the BeatBox table to have a bash at, so I take a look into this with very non-biased eyes... erm.. I have included a bit of gameplay from the Amiga original for comparison. It's remarkable.

Warlock Revenge - A first person shooter inspired by DOS classics aims for a Greenlight success

To be honest although I do play the odd modern day first person shooter such as DOOM or Battlefield 4, I'm still a huge fan of those retro classics such as Blake Stone or even Wolfenstein 3D, which are both playable through Dosbox. So it came as a surprise to me to learn of a new first person shooter aiming for a Steam Greenlight success, that is inspired by those classics but with a dark Gothic overtone. This is ' Warlock Revenge '; a retro look first person shooter that is coming to the PC and developed by Narayan Games.

Jail Break - Genre defining Konami shooter fixed for C64s

"Run and gun" games would come a long way in the year or two following the Arcade release of Jail Break by Konami. They would eventually perfect the format 1 year later with the release of Contra in the arcades, and 2 years later saw William's electronics release the excellent Narc, which caught controversy over it's "realistic" digitised sprites and ultra violent theme. However back in 1986, the arcades had not seen anything like this. Even Double Dragon would take another year to reach us. This is Jail break, a pseudo isometric side scrolling shoot em up, where the prisoners have escaped and taken over Manhattan. This release sees the game fixed for NTSC machines and an assortment of handy training modes for The C64 version.

Mini DOOM - First person shooter hit classic transformed into a 2D platformer!

The original hit Doom was developed by id Software way back in 1993 as a first person shooter playing as a space marine fighting hordes of demons and the undead in order to survive. But now a team by the name of Calavera Studio has released a short tribute to that famous game, but this time as a 2D action platformer called ' Mini DOOM'. Developed using Game Maker Studio, you must collect keys and battle your way through 5 stages using classic Doom weapons and power ups against enemies just as you remember them from the original Doom.
