Lester honoured by LA film critics

Director Richard Lester will be honoured in LA

Richard Lester is set to receive the career achievement award from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA).

The 81-year-old filmmaker, who directed the Beatles' film musicals, A Hard Day's Night and Help!, will be presented with the prize at the awards ceremony at the Intercontinental Hotel in Century City on January 11, 2014.

LAFCA president Stephen Farber tweeted: "Lester was one of the most innovative and influential directors of the 1960s and 70s, refashioning our understanding of cinematic language.

"With our Career Achievement Award, we have a chance to remind people of the accomplishments of some cinematic masters who are not remembered as well as they should be, and Lester is a prime example of an artist whose work deserves to be rediscovered and celebrated."

Richard, who was born in Philadelphia but who is now based in Britain, is best known for his work with the Beatles and on Superman II and III, starring Christopher Reeve, in the 80s.

His last film was the Paul McCartney 1991 concert film Get Back.

Previous honorees of the award include directors Paul Mazursky and Frederick Wiseman, and actors Doris Day and Jean-Paul Belmondo.

Further winners of LAFCA's 2013 film awards will be announced on December 8.
