One of the things we've noticed over the past few weeks is the mega coverage Famitsu has been pouring on the DS.In recent issues, Japan's biggest games magazine has been putting the spotlight on Nintendo's monster portable, with cover spots, special booklets and more!
The latest bonus was included in last week's issue: a special pull-out booklet containing all the capsule DS reviews (termed a "cross-review") the magazine has run since the DS's launch. Included in the booklet was the full review text and scores for 117 titles released between launch date on 12/2/2004 and 2/2/2006.
In case you were wondering what the Famitsu editors have thought about the DS lineup so far, we've listed all the scores from the booklet (we've also included this week's scores). In the chart below, click on the column headers to sort by release date (the default), name, publisher and total score. You can also click on the game name for details on the title (just in case the lengthy Japanese names leave you stumped).

For those keeping score at home, the above review chart includes a total of 120 titles. The average score for a DS game in Famitsu is about 7.1.
A few things should be readily apparent. First, DS releases have been increasing since the system's release. While the beginning of 2005 was pretty slow, by December, Nintendo and its third parties had reached PS2 levels of output. This rise in output looks like it will continue; consulting the release chart at the end of this week's GLiJ, you'll find that the DS has 13 games due on one Thursday in March!
It should also be apparent at just a glance who the biggest DS supporter is: Nintendo itself. Taken with its Pokemon subsidiary, which publishes all Pokemon games, Nintendo has been responsible for 23 of the titles reviewed by Famitsu so far. Nintendo also seems to have an edge on the quality, with the highest score among all DS titles so far going to Nintendogs, which got a rare perfect set of four tens.
Here's a look at how each publisher has stacked up so far in terms of average review score. Click the column headers to sort the data to your liking.

Check out Taito, with its 13 DS games! This feat shouldn't come as much of a surprise, considering that seemingly every issue of Famitsu includes a new DS announcement from Taito. Big third parties like Bandai, Sega and Konami aren't far behind.
The Famitsu review chart is missing a few games. Famitsu only reviews "actual" games, skipping out on titles that fall in the "other" category. Of course, with Nintendo's focus on its "Touch Generations" lineup of titles, the "other" category is all-important for the DS. The list of non-traditional games that weren't reviewed by Famitsu includes:
Of these, the first title, set to be published as "Brain Age" in America, was the first DS title to hit a million copies. The second is its sequel, which shipped a million shortly after its late December 2005 release. The third title is an English language trainer which managed sales of over 200,000 in its first week following a huge commercial campaign from Nintendo. Typical Nintendo momentum, and an influx of users when the DS Lite comes about, could make this one top the million mark in the future as well.
Not all the alternative titles fared so well, though. Nintendo's heavily hyped dictionary program sputtered out without ever crossing the 100,000 mark. Electroplankton never made it into the top 10. Pachinko games and mahjong games don't, in general, sell entirely well, and that holds true on the DS, despite the older user base.
So where does Japan's other new portable system stand in relation to the DS as far as reviews and releases go? We'll have a similar look at the PSP in the next GLiJ.

ZASSHI JOUHOU GO!
This section of Gaming Life in Japan takes a look at what's big in the latest game magazines from Japan. From Famitsu to Dengeki to smaller publications like Dorimaga, Japan has lots of videogame magazines. While we tend to put up all the news and game info revealed in the magazines on the main pages of IGN, this section gives you a closer look just so you can be sure that you're not missing out on anything.
Be sure and click on the covers of each magazine for larger versions. Print them out and hold them in your hand as you read!
FAMITSU -- NO. 896
The big feature in this week's issue of Famitsu is a look forward at the year 2006, with retailers, game players and developers revealing their picks for what will be hot throughout the year. We already posted a summary of the feature, so check it out for all the details.
In addition to all the hard hitting stuff on PS3, Revolution and DS, the survey also asked gamers and retailers to select the game industry person who currently draws their attention the greatest. Gamers selected Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto as number one, followed closely by Mistwalker's Hironobu Sakaguchi at 2 and Konami's Hideo Kojima at 3. Sora's Masahiro Sakurai (the Smash Brothers and Meteos guy) came in a distant fourth, followed closely by Nintendo president Saturo Iwata. The retailer list had the same people, but in a different order: from top to bottom, Sakaguchi, Miyamoto, Kojima Iwata, Sakurai.
The same groups picked the game companies they're most keeping an eye on right now. Nintendo was tops with gamers, followed by Square Enix, Capcom, Bandai Namco Games and Sony Computer Entertainment. Retailers selected Square Enix first (we think Final Fantasy XII had something to do with it), followed by Nintendo, Capcom, Konami and Sony Computer Entertainment.
Outside of the survey, this issue of Famitsu was particularly Japanesey. The PSP version of Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball made its full debut, and is now set for Japanese release on 4/1. The PSP is also getting an arranged version of 2003's PS2 Evangelion 2, titled Evangelion: Another Cases. Rounding out a set of PSP blowouts featured in the magazine are Naruto: Narutimate Portable and Mai Hime.
The magazine has a hefty review list this week, which means it's back to business following a slowdown in releases. Here are the scores for this week.

HOUKOKU CORNER
Welcome to the Gaming Life in Japan ad section, where you'll find the latest game advertisements, commercials and pamphlet scans from Japan. Every week, we'll be bringing you commercials, ads and pamphlets that we've spotted on TV, in magazines and at retailers.
Last week, we said "print advertisements should make their return next week." We stand by this statement. Print ads "should" have made their return this week, but then we accidentally set the IGN PSX to record the latest episode of Kinnikuman and came upon the motherload of Marvelous Inteactive spots. Check out all those girly games, including girl on girl action!
Print ads should (!) make their return next week.

RELEASE DATES
This section of Gaming Life in Japan provides you with an up-to-date release list of games coming out in Japan. We list pretty much everything that's been announced.
In order to make the list more readable, we've split things up into two sections: games that have a release date and games that are TBA. On this page, you'll find the games that have some sort of date attached to them -- even if it's just something vague like TBA 2007.
Recent changes, including new release dates, new names or new prices, are marked in bold. New entries are in red If you encounter something you think may be an error in the list, please e-mail us about it.
