In the early aughts, model Gemma Ward looked different from the other girls on fashion runways. Her large, wide-set eyes and baby-doll face were a new thing coming off the ’90s glamazon-supermodel trend, and she capitalized on it, placing 10th on Forbes’ World’s 15 Top-Earning Models list in 2007. But in an interview with news.com.au, she now is sharing that she’s had second thoughts about her unique beauty.

“Sometimes I wish that I didn’t look like an alien,” she told the Australian news outlet. “I was probably aware of it [that I looked different], but it gets more heightened as you get older.”
Once the youngest model ever to cover American Vogue (she was 16), Ward is now 27 and back from a six-year hiatus following then-boyfriend Heath Ledger’s death. During that time, she dipped her toe into acting — in The Great Gatsby, for one — and had her first child.
“I was searching for ways to define myself away from modeling and also just exploring things that were already a part of me, like writing and playing music and painting,” said Ward. “I didn’t intend in the beginning for it to take so long, but I’m really glad that I took the time, and I feel like it’s been enriching.”
