It’s been a long time between New York stage gigs for Diane Lane. The Oscar-nominated actress was just 12 when she made her last appearance, in 1977 productions of Agamemnon and The Cherry Orchard.
However, Lane will return early next year in Lincoln Center Theater‘s off-Broadway premiere of The Mystery of Love and Sex, a new play by Bathsheba Doran.
Lane stars alongside Tony Shalhoub as parents whose college-age daughter shocks them with the news that a childhood friendship has turned romantic, causing them to reveal truths about their past that threaten the new relationship as well as the bonds of both families.

The younger couple will be played by Mamoudou Athie and Gayle Rankin. Directing the production is Sam Gold, represented on Broadway with the current revival of The Real Thing and later this season with the incoming transfer of the new musical Fun Home.
Doran was a writer on season two of Boardwalk Empire and is currently a writer-producer on Showtime’s Masters of Sex. Her new play will begin previews on Feb. 5 at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater, with opening night set for March 2.
Lane’s last major stage role was in a 2012 production at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre of Tennessee Williams‘ Sweet Bird of Youth. Shalhoub received a lead actor Tony nomination earlier this year for his work in the Lincoln Center Theater production of Act One.
