HUNTINGTON -- Since first opening its doors in July 2005, the Funny Bone has played host to a variety of nationally known comics including D.L. Hughley, Pauly Shore, Gallagher and Bobcat Goldthwait.
As the restaurant gears up for its fifth anniversary, a variety of comedians are scheduled to appear. In coming weeks, feature performers include Theo Von (Feb. 25 to 28), Craig Gass (March 3 to 7), Jennifer Coolidge (March 11 to 14) and Eric Myers (March 18-21).
"We're part of a small family of comedy clubs," Tom Schaefer, managing partner of the Funny Bone, said. "We have locations in Columbus, Dayton, Virginia Beach, Richmond, Cincinnati and Hartford, Conn. We were one of the original businesses the founders of Pullman Square had in mind. They designed the hallway specifically for us and really rolled out the red carpet when the club opened."
While best known for its shows every Thursday through Sunday, the club serves an assortment of traditional pub grub. Favorite features include the Philly cheese steak for $7.99 and the 8-ounce Funny Bone burger for $7.99. The club also serves an assortment of salads ranging in price from $6.99 to $8.29 as well as pizzas, such as the barbecue chicken pizza for $8.59.
The Funny Bone also features a fully stocked bar which serves a wide variety of domestic and imported beers as well as mixed drinks. One of the signature drinks is the Rubber Chicken featuring rum, blue curacao, coconut rum, pineapple juice and sour mix. Another is the Funny Bone Long Island made with gin, rum, vodka, triple sec, sour mix and a splash of cola.
"Some items like the 'Funny Bone burger' and our signature 'chocolate decadence' cake are stationary on all Funny Bone menus," Schaefer said. "Some others like the chicken wings and the alfredo pasta are unique to this location. We recently moved to improve the items on our menu. Our chef now buys many of our ingredients locally. We have tried to keep our prices the same, but up the quantity and quality of our dishes."
While everyone is encouraged to have a good time, the club does have a number of rules. Most shows are for audiences 18 and older or 21 and older. Due to copyright issues, customers are not allowed to bring cameras or recording devices into the club. Cell phones are asked to be turned off to avoid interruptions. Customers are also not allowed to disrupt or heckle acts.
"Live performance is an interesting thing," Schaefer said. "No one would interrupt an opera, but with the loose environment of comedy, some people think they can talk back. It's something we discourage because we don't want to throw the performance off."
The Huntington Funny Bone is located at 26 Pullman Square Drive next to the movie theater. Tickets for shows range from $12 to $30 depending on who is performing. Each week there are shows at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and Sunday evenings, two shows at 7:30 and 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturdays. The club is closed from Monday through Wednesdays, but takes reservations seven days a week. Cash and most major credit cards are accepted (no Discover). No checks are taken at this time.
