The largest privately owned hotel in Cheltenham has changed hands after 16 years following an off market deal brokered by hospitality sector specialists at Colliers International.

The George in St George’s Road, near the city centre, has been purchased by the Cotswolds Inns and Hotels Group off a guide price of £4 million.

Colliers International hotels director Peter Brunt, who acted for vendors Jeremy and Alison Shaw in the deal, said: “Cheltenham boasts a number of top notch hotels, but The George, with its 30 elegant bedrooms and popular Monty’s brasserie, is ideally situated to welcome overseas, business and leisure guests.

“As well as being the gateway to the Cotswolds, Cheltenham offers a host of world class events throughout the year, ensuring its hotels are in constant demand at all times.”

Just two minutes from the city centre, the Grade II listed Georgian hotel has 30 individually designed bedrooms as well as light and stylish meeting rooms. Peter Brunt added: “The Cotswolds was one of the very few regions which performed strongly during the downturn and has positively taken off as the ripple effect brings new generations of aspiring owners.

“Located in the heart of the city centre, Cheltenham’s increasing popularity is underpinned by the lovely countryside, accessibility to London, and the strong trading performance that these factors generate.”

Jeremy and Alison Shaw are both incredibly proud of the success they have made of both the hotel and the Monty’s brand and they are confident that Cotswold Inns and Hotels will continue to grow and develop the business.
