It's official: SSA David Rossi and Dr. Spencer Reid are back together again. Well, sort of.
Criminal Minds star Joe Mantegna visited Las Vegas in August to promote his Señor Rio Tequila. But along the way, he shocked fans with a surprise no one saw coming. In a post uploaded on the actor's Instagram, he revealed he reunited with a beloved former cast mate from the hit procedural drama. Posing alongside Matthew Gray Gubler, he shared how special the meet up meant to him.
"What could possibly be better than having dinner with the one and only @gublergram," he wrote on August 16.
What's more, Instagram wasn't the only place Joe mentioned his reunion with Matthew online. Posting the same photo on X (formerly known as Twitter), he captioned the snapshot with, "Had dinner with the guy who’s like a son to me."
Upon seeing Joe and Matthew together, some of the show's other cast members couldn't help but comment on the photo op.
"Look at the joy in both of your faces! The boys are back," wrote Kirsten Vangsness, who portrays Penelope Garcia. "Our boys!!! 😍😍😍," replied Aisha Tyler, who plays Dr. Tara Lewis.
When fans of Criminal Minds caught wind that Matthew and Joe met up in real life and not on camera, they immediately rejoiced over seeing the actors together once more. "This just warmed my heart," one person wrote on Instagram. "This is EVERYTHING ❤️❤️," a different follower exclaimed. "Convince him to return to Criminal Minds: Evolution. I trust you Joe! 🥹❤️," another added.
While Joe didn't reveal any details about what he and Matthew discussed over dinner, it may be a while before we learn if Matthew will return to the rebooted franchise for Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2. The show is currently on pause amid the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, with no official word on when it will go back into production.
As for Matthew, he's likely gearing up for the September release of his children's book The Little Kid With the Big Green Hand. Meaning: he may be too busy to step back into Spencer Reid's shoes at this moment in time. But if this reunion serves anything, there's always a possibility ...
