Additional information
Orbais-l'Abbaye

Orbais-l'Abbaye, in the heart of Brie des Etangs, is a village of 600 inhabitants where sits a majestic abbey church. Equipped with a Gothic spire, it was built in the 12th and 13th centuries, on the site of the former Benedictine abbey founded by Saint Réole (bishop of Reims) in the 7th century. The architect Jehan d'Orbais took part in the construction of this building by perfecting the process of tracing the high bays in order to bring in more light, supplemented by flying buttresses. This innovation has been reproduced in several cathedrals including those of Reims and Châlons-en-Champagne. Come and admire the period stained glass windows, the ambulatory with five radiating chapels, the superbly evocative stalls. Unmissable place!
