Why Isn’t ‘Fall Guys’ On Nintendo Switch?

This article is more than 3 years old.

Fall Guys is the game of the summer. Weird, fun, approachable (if not always accessible), it takes everything that works about battle royale and flips it around into an insane, bean-focused game show. As a PS4 and PC exclusive, however, it’s not as widely available as it could be right now, unavailable on either Xbox One or Nintendo Switch. Which leads us to wonder when it could come out: the colorful, nonviolent world seems like a particularly great fit for Nintendo Switch, which

First off, it does seem like the game will come to other platforms eventually. In an interview before the game launched, lead game designer Joe Walsh said that the team would love to bring the game to Xbox One, Switch and mobile at some point. That’s also the language used in the official FAQ:

“To start with, Fall Guys will only be available on PS4 and Steam. We'd love to bring the game to other platforms further down the line.”

As far as timing goes, however, It’s important to remember that Mediatonic is a smaller studio, and that nobody could have predicted the massive success of Fall Guys: that’s the nature of hits. We all had a notion that this was going to be big once the beta blew up, but that was pretty close to the finish line. Ramping up just to handle this newfound success is a big deal, and that’s undoubtedly where the studio’s focus is at this point. Other platforms take work that Mediatonic might not yet be ready to take on yet.

So I would be surprised if Fall Guys did not eventually come to Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Mobile. If I had to guess I’d say that would be the order, as well, though that’s just guesswork. This thing is a hit, and releasing on other platforms can both give the game a big new audience and a second wind of attention and excitement.

But that’s a ways off, and I’d be patient until then. When smaller games blow up, they sometimes carry with them the same expectations of new content that large studio games have, and keeping up with the demands of a megahit in the post-Fortnite era can be a lot.

I would hope that we would also get crossplay at that point, something the game doesn’t have yet. Fall Guys isn’t as low-skill as it would appear, but mouse and keyboard players certainly don’t get any sort of innate advantage like they might with a shooter.
