These seeds are a challenge and the only seeds in my shop that I cannot guarantee. With that said, I have customers that have successfully grown them, one recently reported that hers has spread and she now has a field of them! Sweetgrass is a wonderfully aromatic grass used to make braids for smudging and basket making.
This grass has been and continues to be a staple in Native American culture for centuries. The grass is burned for prayer and purification. It symbolizes peace, healing and spirituality. The aroma produced by the smoke is literally “sweet” smelling with vanilla notes. Rather than “burning,” it smolders which makes it perfect even for indoor use. The braids can also be kept as decoration. Sage is used to clear negative energy, while sweetgrass is used to invite positive energy.
Because of its durability and attractiveness, it is also used for basket making resulting in beautiful pieces of functional art.
Sweetgrass is known to be a cold weather plant grown in marshlands. As long as it receives full sun and lots of water, it reproduces very quickly.
The seeds has a low germination rate of 10-30%, partially due to the requirement of a “cold spell” in order to sprout. Unfortunately I cannot guarantee germination. I do provide 40 seeds though, to try to increase your chances of getting some plants. This gives you the possibility of 4-12 plants. If you can get just one plant to sprout, you’re set and it will continue to spread very easily.
This listing is for 40 seeds, I would suggest planting all seeds and the ones that do sprout will also reproduce by way of underground rhizomes. You will have dozens of plants in no time with this method of reproduction. Seeds can take a few weeks to even a months to sprout so this will require some patience. They can live in the soil and remain dormant without breaking down for quite some time. I am in zone 10 and I actually did get these to sprout via artificial cold stratification. However, they died after a couple of hot summers. While germination is possible, they cannot be sustained in warmer climates.
The seeds are typically pretty hard to come by as the grass produces masses of seeds but then stops for many months to a year.
The seeds can be sown in late fall or winter for a spring emergence, or cold stratified in your refrigerator for 30 days. Simply fold the seeds into a moist paper towel and seal them in a ziploc bag and place them in your refrigerator for 30 days.
