Range; Trans-Pecos Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, northern Mexico

This is the beautiful West Texas rainbow cactus with large showy flowers, which are a brilliant yellow with bright green throats. It is a generally solitary cylindrical stem, but sometimes has as many as 20 branches. Spines may be all white or with bands of varying colors such as pink, russet, tan, reddish, or brown. Water plant when soil dries during the growing season. Use very well-drained soil mix with plenty of grit, perlite, pumice, or decomposed granite. Prefers bright sunlight and withstands temperatures down to 10F. Keep dry during winter dormancy.
