This story contains MAJOR spoilers for John Wick: Chapter 4.

Before a John Wick film is made, Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stakelski meet at the Imperium Hotel in Japan and drank whisky together until they figure out the next path for their titular hero. Whether or not John Wick lived or died, fought Donnie Yen and Hiroyuki Sanada, or went on an unbelievable car chase throughout the Arc de Triomphe in Paris? It was all decided by whatever ideas "a few glasses of Yamazaki or Hibiki [whisky]" got flowing, Stahelski told Collider. "Next thing you know, we’re like, ‘I didn’t know we could do this.’ And that’s how we start writing them.”

Despite Chapter 4 spelling the end for our good boy Jonathan Wick at the end of the latest installment in the action franchise, a good glass of aged whisky could always give the pair another brainstorm. "We're going to give John Wick a rest," Stahelski reiterated in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter—but a rest doesn't necessarily mean forever. "Keanu and I will take the long trip to Tokyo, we'll sit in the Imperial Hotel Scotch Bar and go, 'What do you think?' We'll have a couple 20-year-old whiskies and write some ideas on napkins. If those ideas stick, maybe we'll make a movie."

Though spinoffs for John Wick 4 characters including Akira (Rina Sawayama), Caine (Donnie Yen), Mr. Nobody (Shamier Anderson), Ana De Armas's Ballerina, an upcoming The Continental Peacock series are currently in the works, you best believe Lionesgate is begging for John Wick 5. John Wick: Chapter 4 already gave ol' Wick an ending, and then some. But one more whisky meeting and I'm sure they can work out how the man comes back. After all, Chapter 4 was the biggest opening-weekend gross for any John Wick film yet.

"Keanu and I have talked,” Stahelski revealed recently on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. "If you ask him right now, ‘Would you do John Wick 5?’ He’d be, ‘F**k yeah!’ But then he’d look and go, ‘Well, what is it? I have no f**king idea.’" The director also said that there's still plenty of material and set pieces in the vault that they weren't able to pull off yet, and that once he figured out the "main thread" it would be go time. "Within 30 seconds I’d be on the phone to Keanu and we’d be riffing," he stated.

Here at Esquire, we don't want to close the door on John Wick permanently. Thankfully, it seems like everyone is just raring to reload. "What I will say is that we never actually see him dying," co-writer Michael Finch revealed in an interview with Polygon. “We see a [grave] plot. What happened in between... is up for interpretation.”
