About this product

Product Information

A good-looking pack of werewolves that has ruled Bucharest for 5,000 years becomes threatened when one among them begins to question the traditions they have adhered to over the centuries. Vivian (Agnes Bruckner, DREAMLAND) is a teenage werewolf whose destiny has been tied to her pack since she was orphaned at a young age. The pack's menacing leader, Gabriel (Olivier Martinez, BEFORE NIGHT FALLS), has designs on Vivian, and hopes to make her his next wife, while the rest of Vivian's "family" keeps a close watch on her every move. This makes things difficult when Vivian, against her better judgment, begins a tentative relationship with Aiden (Hugh Dancy, THE JANE AUSTEN BOOK CLUB), a graphic artist who has come to the city to study the mythical loup-garou for his next book. Vivian tries to keep her growing love a secret, but when Gabriel discovers that she has feelings for a human, he sets off a chain of events that threaten to destroy the pack--or change its bloodthirsty ways. Vivian and the extraordinary Aiden--who manages to outwit the loup-garou in ways they never thought possible--are forced to go on the run, but they must eventually face Vivian's pack in a confrontation that forces all to examine what keeps man and beast constantly at war. The film's setting in moody, beautifully dilapidated Bucharest adds an air of mystery that the special effects struggle to match. Hugh Dancy is a charmer, and the tale is a mixture of Gothic myth and teenage romance that will appeal to fans of UNDERWORLD and THE CROW.

  • Blood and Chocolate movie review

Blood and Chocolate has a familiar theme similar to that of Underworld. Both movies were directed by the same person so the similarities are understandable. The movie itself I found to be pretty good. Vivian who is a natural born werewolf has had her family in America killed by hunters, so she has returned to Romania to live with her aunt who is also a werewolf. Living there, she has been arranged for her to marry the "Leader of the Pack" Gabriel. Apparently, if the werewolf pack there is no monogamy for the leader since Vivian's aunt was also "Mated" with Gabriel at an earlier time. In Blood and Chocolate, you are either born a werewolf or not, you can not be turned into one. Vivian meets and eventually falls in love with a normal human and this causes a ...

  • Blood and Chocolate - Werewolves evolve

I liked this movie very much. However, I feel a great deal of the plot line was taken from the excellent series by Kelley Armstrong, starting with "Bitten". I also recommend the excellent but gothic trilogy: Ginger Snaps, Ginger Snaps Back, and Ginger Snaps: The Beginning. I preferred the third one, but most other fans of the werewolf genre prefer the first two. Like the vampire genre, the werewolf legend is evolving into a society with rules, a genealogy, and a different strategy with mankind. In this film, I liked the special effects of the transformation. Although not as dramatic as the skin bursting, bone stretching examples from the 70's and 80's such as An American Werewolf in London, and The Howling, it is effective as it seems more supernatural. ...

  • Blood and Chocolate, a dark treat

Less silly, and somewhat more Eurocentric than the American Werewolf movies, Blood and Chocolate is a must-have for any afficianado of the genre. Set in Bucharest, Romania, the screenplay is loosely based on the popular youth fiction novel by Annette Curtis Klause, evoking Twilight-esque themes of supernatural attraction and alienation. Agnes Bruckner's performance as the grown expat orphan Vivian is both solid and engaging, and the emnity between love interest Aiden (played by Hugh Dancy) and The Pack is palpable from the get-go. In this age of special effects juggernauts, the sparing use CGI here arguably does seem a bit low-budget at times. The onset of the "glamour" and subsequent transformation of the loup-garoux is rendered in a painterly, romanticized style, ...

  • Blood And Chocolate - A Howling Tale

It's an excellent werewolf movie unlike any I have ever seen. While it is drastically different than the novel, it provides a new perspective on the story (Vivian chooses Aiden in the movie instead of Gabriel like she does in the book.) In addition, real wolves were used in the movie instead of wolf-dog hybrids. Which was a real challenge for the filmmakers - but you can tell they are real wolves and not hybrids. The only reason why it did not get an 'Excellent' rating is because, in my personal opinion, it doesn't follow the book at all. (Besides using the same title and character names.) The movie would have been a 'masterpiece' if it had followed the book more closely, though it would have been practically impossible to 'train' the ...

  • Good Movie But...

I loved the book when I was younger and was really excited to see that there was a movie coming out based on the book. I finally watched the movie tonight and was shocked at how much they have changed from the book. While there are some things the same, like character names, the Five, them being able to turn into wolves, not much else remind the same. I tried to forget everything I knew about the book while watching it, it was hard at first but I wanted to give the movie a fair chance. I did start getting into it and did enjoy watching it. The actors were great and so was the action parts of the movie. The story line stayed pretty solid and stayed on track. The special effects (human turning into a wolf) was really good too. And they are not some cheesy werewolves, they are real ...
