"Red Alert! Red Alert! Battle Stations!" Earth has been attacked by a mysterious group of alien entities. Their technology seems to be light-years ahead of our own and they don't seem interested in communicating with us. You must quickly man your fighters to halt their advance as they are mercilessly annihilating nearly everything in their path. Destroy these aliens as quickly as possible before all of humanity is wiped out! Good luck! <br><br>In Descent: Freespace -- The Great War, you are a pilot for the Galactic Terran Alliance (GTA) and must defend the Earth from the evil Shivans, a powerful war-like alien race who have invaded this region of the galaxy. Previously engaged in a conflict over galactic real estate with the Vasudans, Terran forces must form an alliance of convenience with them to meet this new threat. To further exacerbate the situation, a rogue Vasudan faction not enamored by the alliance, known as the Hammer of Light, is created and complicates the already delicate situation.<br><br>You have an arsenal of weapons and tools to use for your ship that can be configured differently for any mission. You also have access to eight fighters and bombers that will allow you to perform many unique tasks. Missions range from intense dogfights with swarms of enemy reinforcements to reconnaissance and hit and run objectives. <br><br>Many features are included in this CD-ROM, including a mission editor called "FRED" that allows you to alter missions or create your own. In-game options are available such as ship formations, attack strategies and camera angles. The AI system has been tweaked from the earlier Descent games so that the enemies are smarter, quicker and more educated to your strategies. <br><br>The game features 30 branching campaign missions that differ depending on the successes and failures of your missions. Twenty multi-player levels are available and support for up to 12 people via Internet or LAN is provided. The game includes not only the main single-player campaign but also Cooperative, Team vs. Team and Dogfight multi-player modes that can be played as either single missions or a campaign. Volition offers a specialized Internet matching service, Parallax Online, and standalone server software is also available.<br><br>The GTA needs all the help they can get to stop the threat in Descent: Freespace -- The Great War and you are a key part of that help. Get to your ship and take to the stars!

    Freespace--the way you want it.

    I always find myself returning to FreeSpace because if you don&apos;t feel like playing a mission someone else writes the rules for, you have the option of basically writing your own. There are tons of freedoms, and while it might not be &quot;state of the art&quot; gameplay...so what? Not everything has to be state of the art; we&apos;re allowed to just have some fun. Freespace really is fun, easy to deal with (VERY user friendly as far as I&apos;m concerned) and the graphics are just fine for killing some time cruising around outerspace on various missions. (With the lights off around me at night, headphones on, the graphics are terrific. Some of the newer, more &quot;high tech&quot; games are great, but there are sometimes TOO MANY commands to deal with and learn, and for a person who ...

    Descent: Freespace, The Great War

    This is a fantastic game. Given the time it came out, its graphics and effects are outstanding. The story also keeps players engaged and filled with suspense and anticiption of the Shivan threat. The only issue this game faces is the system requirement. In short, you need Windows ME or 98 in order to experience this amazing game, and I don&apos;t believe either operationg system is popular today. I have enjoyed this game so much that I have repaired and maintained my old computer and shortly after purchasing this game I jumped in the cockpit of my favorite space fighter and engaged the enemies of the Galactic Terran Alliance.

    One of the last of a dying breed

    This is one of my favorite space flight sims. Absolutely loved this game when my friend lent it to me, I decided to buy it so I could play it whenever the heck I wanted! The graphics are amazing for their time, the gameplay is solid, the voice acting is believable and real. If you love space flight sims get this game, and experience one of the genres brightest stars.

    Descent: Freespace-The Great War

    A good PC based, joystick controlled spaceship game. This would make a good Christmas gift. Although written for Windows 95, it will run on Windows XP using the program compatibility feature of Windows.
