Origin: Coastline of Sonora (Mexico), near Guaymas, between the bay of San Carlos and the bay of San Pedro, in cracks of the volcanic rocks often with very little soil, and in full sun.

Growth Habits: Slowly clumping, globose stem, mostly obscured by the spines, 1.6 inches tall (4 cm), 1.25 inches wide (3 cm); 1 dark central spine, hooked, 0.6 to 0.8 inch long (15-20 mm); 20 to 30 radials. The wild specimens are genrally much smaller than the cultivated ones.

Watering Needs: Moderate water. Keep dry in winter.
