Alrighty, so after being on a roll with the hybrids, I finished up 2 more Termies and the converted C.A.T. Went a little OSL crazy on em, but I think it turned out pretty well! Also put some of my ebayed watch gears and bits to use on the bases, didnt go crazy, just wanted it to look like junk in the hallways. Camera was a little wacky tonight, so not the best pics, but -

And individually. First the C.A.T, like this version sooo much better than the rolling servo skull/litterbox/x-mas tree version lol, that's just me though...

Brother Omnio, now with more servo arm, antennae and Mechanicus Icons -

And the Slicy Brother Claudio

Now what to do next... finish the 3 other SH red termies, hit Brother Callistarius up, or give the Dantenator some love...

@Kid Kyoto is neither a Kid nor the city of Kyoto. Discuss.

Seriously though thanks for bumping the thread after the auto-append shenaniggans, and thank you even more for putting me in the same sentence as Navarro... I'm not sure I'm fit to shine his chitin, but i'll take what I can get lol!

@madmartykmf, this would be the right place to start if you haven't done it before, http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.php?showtopic=117358. After that, there was an OSL tutorial in WD 359 (I think?) featuring a Verminlord with glowing warpstone I found really good. You are right though, you can completely bugger a model if you get it wrong... Although not too badly if its just eyes. The trick is multiple layers of thinned paints, and figuring out where the light would be hitting if it actually came from the 'source. Also, always remember that the intensity of the light will smoothly fade away as you get further!

@Cadaver, I'm sure there is a spare box or two kicking around out there . I have one, I bought it for parts and more board sections, but I haven't needed to open it yet... to answer your question, those bases are from Fenris Games, they have an ebay store and a website, http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Fenris-Games/_i.html?_nkw=sulaco&submit=Search&_sid=55776203, sulaco bases is what you want!

Although, I saw these http://www.fiendishfabrications.com.au/html/iron_decksrs_2.html

and these looked awesome too -
http://hitechminiatures.com/6/product/info/39

@Khaine, don't worry man, they won't go bad in the box Normally I would encourage you to get em out and get going on them, but I'm sorry, I enjoy watching your kit bashing grot madness too much

Here are some more pics of the CAT, first batch looked like smeg IMO, really wanted to show the weathering on the red's and the osl a bit more -

Alright, that's it for now, thanks so much guys!

Thanks man, I had actually finished the unaltered version, but all I could see when I looked at it was a servo skull dragging a wagon with a miniature church and xmas tree scene. I wanted the redesign to look like a proper probe, one that could manipulate objects and have a lot of recording/transmitting equipment on it, and one where everything looked like it was there for a functional reason.

p.s subscribe may not work, it seems to wipe subscriptions and email notifications every time i change the main title... :(

Alphy, thank you very much sir! Both for your comment and your reason for coming to the thread in the first place

i'd do you one better. i may borrow the terminator techmarine idea for my deathwing (assuming rulewise i can find a way of giving him an invul save!) as well as modifing my CAT objective marker to look more like tom's. I definitely like the look of the extra arm and little satellite dish. is the arm from fabius bile's backpack chirurgeon?

Actually, both of the manipulator arms are scratchbuilt out of plastirod and plasticard. The only bit involved was the engine housing of a chainsword in the 'forearm' on the pincer/caliper arm. The dish is from a rhino kit, the main body is a teleport homer from a termie box, and the camera/scanner area is from a marine dev sergeant backpack.

I wanted my terms to be representative of a command squad in some ways, so one of the non-SH termies I am modeling up with also have a narthecium (sp?) too. It's not game legal as far as I know, but it adds a lot of character to the group I find, I had to make sure the added ones could stand with the elaborate SH models.

Wow, CAT pops alot mor ein these pics. I think he's great, but I find the skull itself oddly lacking in grime - it's very clean when compared to the rest of the model. OSL is ace!

Thanks! The skull is actually pretty cracked and scummy looking, but it's a subtlety that is lost in favor of the reds in the pics. Because I usually end up taking the pics at night, I photoshop the levels and contrast as best I can to even out the tones and especially bring up the midtones so they are clear in the pics. It's a tough balance to strike, and usually involves some aspect or other suffering, be it the color accuracy, graininess or whatnot. It's not easy to get a pic that actually looks like the models lol! I will retake shots of them in my lightbox in daylight next time I get enough done to set it all up, they will be much better pics then!

Monkeh, no worries man, everyone is entitled to their opinion! It is a little ott, but for the claws I really wanted to make a statement with it, see the energy fields in mid discharge. Don't worry though, the other termies will not have osl to this degree, it will pretty much just be the eyes. Omnios 'lights' are brighter than their's as I picture them hyper-active due to active use of the Auspex.

For the red on the CAT, I really like how they turned out, I think I have perfected the chipping/weathering recipe for that particular color! To my tastes anyways lol.

Thanks for the comments though, any and all are welcome, your take on the OSL was perfectly arguable and politely put my friend!

Archie! Good to see you dude where were you hiding???

OSL is the same thing as directional source lighting, just faking glow... it is the nmm of lighting effects lol.

So, kinda big announcement...

In an effort to actually finish this project and move on to other things, I have struck a deal and GMM studios will be painting the hybrids and extra termies!! I would love to have done every single lick of paint and every inch of sculpting on this project, but it has been huge, and I am running out of steam knowing how much still lies ahead.

The idea is that GMM will paint these guys at Alpha level (their best!) and when I get them back, I will continue on painting them adding whatever time consuming advanced techniques I can. It will still be a lot of work, but honestly, I am very happy that I don't have to worry about the basics and base layers on the hybrids... I will be keeping the 2 Magus' for myself though, and painting up a prototype for the uniform reference.

What does that leave? Well, I still have the 2 aforementioned magi to go, Dantenaor to finish, and the 3 last SH termies, Gideon, Leon and Valencio, and finally, Callistarius/Tween Mephiston...

After that, with Eggroll as inspiration, it will be a BA army painted with Airbrushing as the primary means! Of course, I promised everyone over in news and rumors one of these too...

Hope that makes sense to all you guys who have been kind enough to follow this thread for the past year! After all, I wouldn't want to burn out and change the name of the thread to SpaceHulk:Incomplete lol!

Lol thanks boys, that is indeed a Photoshop job I did the day the first photo leaked. Unfortunately nothing has changed on the 'ol chibi-hawk design, but I will give em credit for at least putting VTOL thrusters in the front like I imagined!

As for the painting, you are exactly right Dante, there is only so much you can get done in a year vs the standards you set for yourself. I honestly think that if this works out, I.e GMM gets recognition for the alpha job and advertises it without my brush, so. Win for him, and then I o enough afterwards to call the my own again too... Best of both worlds.

I told GMM, there is probably a he'll of a lot of half finished stuff sitting on shelves out there in mid to high end hobbyists homes... Marketing to them as a way to effectively kick start a project back into full activity/ speed things up is probably something a lot of people would consider with relief... Showing they are a viable partner for attempts at demon level stuff or attempts at demon level stuff could be very good for business indeed...

Most seem to like it judging by the gallery scores, but I totally understand why it's not for some. Don't worry, it's a lightning claw onlybeffect, and that's the only set of lightning claws I own! THATS....

Perfectly reasonable at this point lol!

There are links to the fan dex on page 19, at the bottom of the post with all the inspiration images.

On the project front, I took a little break to continue work on Astorath the Grimm and Sanguinor... Both of these bought from VERY talented painters (GD winner) Pedro Rufo, and Sanguinor from a new Polish group BrushBrothers. I love them. I also had to work on them myself a bit so I could feel they were mine since they will now be part of my planned BA army! I really think they turned out amazing, especially next to each other, they really show the duality of vengeful justice/martial nobility. Also settled my basing scheme, hopefully you gusy will like.

Next up, wip on the last 4 termies to complete the contents of the SH box to the best of my ability, also got ambitious and went back to touch up the bases of my prefvious terms with watch guts I ordered from ebay. I like they cluttered dirty corridor look

After that, the hybrids are away to GMM, and that leaves me to paint up the 2 custom Magi, and then it will be time to transition to Eggroll style airbrush madness!

I've gone a bit crazy buying minis off ebay, I now have a significant BA Army waiting for loving -

-Dantenator (Model has an SB built into a PF and a powersword, I kinda figured you could either use him as a term captain and choose between the sword or fist, or, alternately, counts as Dante)

- Astorath

- Sanguinor

- Golden Tycho

Captain and command squad, banner, apoth, CC, sarge with PF

Librarian w/Fw

Termie Librarian (callistarius... counts as mephiston??)

16X termies (space hulk squads on 40mm bases, plus another sarge with powersword and bolter (culln), 3 sb and PF, 1 sb and cyclone launcher)

5X BA honor guard with Jump packs

- 5X sanguinary guard, chapter banner, 2xinferno pistol
- 5X sanguinary guard, Powerfist, 2xinferno pistol
- 5X sanguinary guard (not built... I assume go PF and 2x inferno?)

-10X DC, bolters, 2 with pw and 1 TH

- 5X DC (think will split and mix these parts up with tacs, then make a Sternguard unit with melta madness)

10 man assault squad, sarge with pf and shield, melta
10 man assault squad, sarge with pf, melta
10 man assault squad, sarge with pf, melta

10 man Tac squad, Sarge with PF, special - melta (plasma option), ML
10 man Tac squad, Sarge with PF, special - melta (plasma option), ML
10 man Tac squad, sarge with power sword, special - flamer, ML

5 devs, sarge with pf, 2 las, 1 plas and 1 hb

Rhino magnetized to Razorback, HB turret or lasplas option

Rhino magnetized to Razorback lasplas option

LandRaider Phobos with sb, magnetized with redeemer option

3X furioso, config undecided, but thinking about 1 of each option to keep things fun

1 MajorTom pattern StormRaven

Bold = done
Ital = IP

As you can see, I have an absolute crapton of work ahead of me, but I consider it an airbrushing challenge, Am looking to get high quality much faster than my normal way!

Comments welcome if you feel like it!

A whole army... There is something about seeing a table full of these little dudes and the satisfaction of making it through.

It took me a year to paint 60 or so guys to the standards seen in this blog, so I figure by switching to Eggrolls methods, I can get the army done in another year or so. I think his work and army are amazing if you havent seen it yet. I also enjoy the challenge of mastering (to a functional degree) new techniques... Last year, I had never done OSL, never sculpted anything, never done nmm, used weathering powders of plasticard, pinned anything or used resin of any kind... now I have, and it's awesome!

That and I went really, really crazy on ebay LOL. There were so many good deals! I got most of the list above for around 500 bucks alltogher, LR, 2 razors, 30 assault, 30 tacticals, command squad, honor guard, 10 dc's StormRaven and 3 Furiosos??? I can't stop myself lol! Now I want another SR, drop pods and Baals... but I will refrain, this was more than enough for now. Damn you Eggroll!

He is believe or not new to hobbying relatively, he has combined a lot or Lbursleys techniques but in my opinion taken them further and combined them with appropriate freehand work and truly epic color choices. Choosing the right reds at the right mix is tougher than it sounds.

Anyways, I find his work inspirational.

A small off track update -

This is a mini I ordered from BattleBrush Studio, I was so Impressed when I saw it on eBay I had to grab it. On receiving it, one of the wings was lamentably chipped up, so I repainted them red, added thruster glow, and several other little touches, most importantly recoloring the base from grey to Terracotta, what I have decided will be the basing scheme of my upcoming BA army.

Then we have Astorath the Grimm, the wings have had some freehand work and highlights put in beyond the airbrushing, and several other tiny and subtle adjustments. Also based on Terracotta. I love the two of these guys again beside each other, they are now a perfect representation of the grim detroyer/noble warrior aspects of Sanguinius.

Astoraths wings need a matte varnish, little shiny still -

Moving on, the final 4 minis and the last steps to completing the contents of the Space Hulk box are WIP, Reds are done, blue halfway done... just a teaser!

Now, my scheme for the hybrids has been narrowed to some form of mixed scheme based on these two paintjobs -

And CMDante's oft referenced IG

Somewhere in between these two is the 4th gen's scheme, and elements of the 2nd and 3rd gens too...

Thougts?

Thanks for the comments dude! I see what you are saying regarding the color, but I personally quite like it. I find sanguinor balanced out and inclusive with other BA's with a bit more red, and for Astorath, for his 'He stands apart' fluff, I went with a color on his wings that I will not use anywhere in the rest of the army, that ghostly Jade/blue tone.

Thank for your words on the color scheme! I would just find it a shame if I couldn't do chipping on the armor!

These 2 are the only 2 models shown not completely painted by me, Astorath is by Pedro Rufo, a GD winner, and Sanguinor comes from BrushBrothers in Poland... I did work further on them though but I can't do NMM as well as the Sanguinor... YET! I plan on learning from Sanguinor when I finish up the Dantenator!

More work was done on Astorath than Sanguinor by me, Sanguinor is only the base and wings, Astorath was more of an overall layering and detailing to push him a bit further -

Whoa thanks man! That was a very nice compliment mate, I am particularly glad you liked the terracotta bases!

For the wings, chaos black base, then very light zenithal airbrush of Turquoise, then go in and gently layer on the turquoise, hopefully quite thinned with thinner not water, and keep going till you get a pretty smooth gradient. The paint needs to be thinned enough to be quite translucent for this to work. A few layers like this, then finally, mix in some cold grey (elf grey?) into the turquoise, thin again and gently work into an edge highlight.

The coloring of the jade lessens with each row of feathers until the top/inner most rows just get an edge highlight in thin jade, followed by a spot of the jade/grey mix.

Most of my techniques for vivid colors involve the patient blending of 1, maybe 2 colors over and over to get as smooth a transition as possible. The reds on the termies for example. Then a mixed lighter edge highlight, with possibly another one after the first if it looks good. \

Really appreciate the kind words Monkeh, hope the above makes sense!

Meager he says... first, you chose a white army, that's bollocks my friend! I wouldn't want to take that on lol!

I didnt see much painting yet, but if your conversion and sculpting skills are anything to go by, I have a feeling you'll be fine

All I can say is that blending thin transluscent layers into one another is the absolute smoothest, most vivid way I have found so far to brush paint. And I haven't even been using white bases which is something I really should be doing to leverage this technique to its fullest. Misgula and Lunchbox are particular examples of the color depth you can achieve with a little patience and experience!

One thing I would definetly recommend for you Monkeh is an airbrush. It will do insane things for your army paint scheme, get the shoulders serperately with reds, then go to town on everything else with whites, you will bang out an army so fast and so well it will make your head spin!

Check out Miniature Mentors Dreadnaught tutorial with Mathieu Fontaine, it will completely sell you on doing the whites this way, trust me, it will be the best 25 bucks you could spend!

Probably should have posted this on your thread lol...

Cut them off, very carefully. I used sprue clippers to cut off everything but the bits around their feet, then with a scalpel, slowly and carefully work cut the feet off with a rocking motion. Don't try to power through, the plastic is quite hard for one, but if your angle is off you could slice half the foot off!

Cut in a ways on all sides of the foot with your blade angled slightly away from the body, then when you are a good bit through on all sides, you can apply blunt pressure and get it all off. After that, just shave off the bottom until it is flat, that part is easy! Good luck and don't forget to show us your results when you are done!
