Alan Shearer has opened up about his move to Blackburn and how his wife Lainya reacted to their move to the north-west town.

After exploding onto the scene with Southampton as a 20-year-old, Shearer was snapped up by recently-minted Blackburn for a club-record £3.6m in the summer of 1992.

Lainya, who was born and raised in Southampton, was eight months pregnant at the time, but drove up to Blackburn with her husband to look at houses, but when she got there she burst into tears.

"My missus was eight months pregnant and she'd barely ever been outside of Southampton," Shearer said speaking on the The Rest Is Football Podcast. "Some of the places [we were looking at to buy houses] weren't the greatest of places and she burst into tears and says 'What the f*** have you done to me?'

"I told her 'Don't worry it'll work out, it'll be alright', and it was."

Shearer went on to score a staggering 112 goals in 138 league games for Rovers, with 34 of them (a Premier League record until Erling Haaland bested the tally last season) coming in Blackburn's triumphant title-winning campaign in 1994/95.

In 1996 he joined boyhood club Newcastle for £15m (a British transfer record) after rejecting Manchester United, and went on to score 148 more times in the league, bringing his total to 260 - more than any other player in the competition's history.

Shearer revealed he had a number of opportunities to play abroad during his career, receiving offers from the likes of Juventus and Barcelona prior to his move to Newcastle, but chose to remain in England in order to avoid uprooting his family.

He and Lainya, who have been married since 1991, have three children together, Hollie, Will and Chloe. 28-year-old Hollie is a singer-songwriter who is currently dating England rugby ace Joe Marchant, while 32-year-old Chloe is a sports agent.

Will, 23, used to be a promising rugby union star, having spent a number of years in Newcastle School for Boys' team.
