Devoted to Bernard Manciet (1923-2005), the exhibition was first presented at the Villa Béatrix-Enea d'Anglet (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) before settling in Sabres, the artist’s hometown. With more than 167 works including paintings, drawings and sketches, this retrospective, which inaugurates the 2024 season launch of the Marquèze Ecomuseum can be visited until September 1, 2024 at the Pavilion. Having died in Mont-de-Marsan in 2005, the artist did not see himself as a painter, but rather as a stroller from where his art proceeded and that this was his true profession.
Known as «the Gascon poet who keeps the world in a pot of resin», in the words of his contemporary sociologist Robert Escarpit, Bernard Manciet transcends the borders of his Landes terroir to reach a striking universality. An incendiary poet, an epic surrealist, his verses resonate like psalms and reveal a true connection with the land where he was born. But, beyond his literary fame, he was also a talented visual artist and passionate about jazz.
In Marquèze, an ecomuseum located dan a unique natural environment in Europe
Created in 1969, the Marquèze Ecomuseum is one of the very first museums of its kind in France. Located in the Landes de Gascogne Regional Natural Park, this museum of France offers visitors an immersive experience in the traditional life of the Landes in the 19th century, through exhibitions, demonstrations of old crafts and themed walks.
The Pavilion, erected in 2008 in front of the former Sabres station, houses exhibitions and preserves the 30,000 objects in the collection. The permanent exhibition traces the development of the Landes de Gascogne region since the 19th century. Each year, a temporary exhibition explores the links between the territory and contemporary issues, covering various fields such as geography, art, archaeology and ethnography.
