Find your shows with an intuitive on-screen guide
DIRECTV's interactive program guide makes it easy to find out what's on. You can scroll through a complete listing of all available programs, or search for a show by title, person, keyword, or channel. After you've found what you're after, simply highlight the title to display more information about the selected show. Another press of a button changes the HR20 to the correct channel for the show you want to watch.

A built-in digital video recorder
The HR20 also lets you save your shows for viewing later on. Simply select a program via the interactive guide, and the HR20 will record it to its internal hard drive. You can record up to 50 hours of high-definition content or 200 hours of standard-definition programs. And you won't need to worry about missing an episode of your favorite show — DIRECTV's Series Link lets the HR20 automatically record an entire season of a specific program, even if the broadcast time or date changes. You can even pause "live" TV for up to 90 minutes at a time, so you won't miss a moment when the phone rings or you have the urge to grab a snack.

Note: Purchase of this item requires a 2-year minimum commitment to DIRECTV® service and a credit card. Receiver Features

DIRECTV Note: The HR20 package includes the HD receiver only! It does not include an LNB or dish, which must be purchased separately in order to have a complete system. A DIRECTV subscription is required in order to receive programming. The HD receiver also has a built in HD DVR for easy recording. For this feature to be fully functional you must connect the receiver to a land-based phone line and subscribe to the DVR service through DIRECTV, sold separately.

DIRECTV Compatibility: This receiver is compatible with single and multi-sat DIRECTV dishes. When used with the multi-sat oval dish, this receiver can receive all programming from DIRECTV's 101?, 110?, and 119? satellites simultaneously. It is also compatible with the new 5 LNB satellite dishes, which receives signals from the same satellites as the 3 LNB dishes, plus the 99? and 103? satellites for certain local stations transmitting in HD as they become available. The HR20 receiver is also compatible with MPEG-4.

Format Compatibility: In addition to receiving all DIRECTV standard and high-definition signals, the HR20 receiver has a built-in ATSC tuner to receive and decode all over-the-air HDTV/SDTV formats.

B-Band Converter: The HR20 receiver includes two SUP-2400 B-Band Converters, which must be installed on the receiver. It has a threaded male F connector, and should be connected to the Satellite In coaxial jack on the back of the receiver. The converter also has a female coaxial input to receive the signal from the satellite dish. This converter up-converts the satellite signal transmitted in the Ka-band (250-750 MHz) into a 1650-2150 MHz useable signal.

Display Formats: The HR20 receiver features multiple format modes that can be selected from the remote control and front panel to best reproduce the original broadcast on a wide variety of televisions. It decodes 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i broadcast formats and can output video to your TV in any of these. During the setup process you specify which of these resolutions your TV will accept. If your TV will display all resolutions, the Native display option is available, which shows the program in its native broadcast resolution.

HDMI Equipped: The HR20 is equipped with an HDMI output which carries both digital audio and video signals to HDMI compatible TVs. The HDMI jack uses HDCP content protection to allow you to view HD programming encoded using the HDCP protection system. You can connect the HR20 via a DVI connection when an HDMI-DVI converter is used. You will also need to connect an audio cable because DVI carries only video signals.

4:3 TV: When you view a 16:9 aspect ratio picture using a 4:3 aspect ratio TV you can choose:

  • Letter Box: Displays the entire 16:9 picture and fills the void with black bars appearing at the top and bottom of the screen
  • Stretch: The picture is stretched vertically to fill the screen
  • Crop: Zooms in on the picture to fill the screen vertically and the left and right edges are cropped

16:9 TV: When you view a 4:3 aspect ratio picture using a 16:9 aspect ratio TV you can choose:

  • Pillar Box: The original 4:3 aspect ratio picture with black or gray bars on the left and right sides
  • Stretch: Stretches the picture horizontally to fill the entire screen
  • Crop: Zooms in on the picture to fill the screen horizontally and the top and bottom edges are cropped

Digital Audio Output: The optical digital output is located on the rear panel, and allows you to send a Dolby Digital bitstream to a Dolby Digital receiver or decoder.

Dolby Digital: This unit is capable of receiving Dolby Digital signals and passing those signals through the optical digital and HDMI outputs to a Dolby Digital A/V receiver.

Advanced Program Guide: The DIRECTV Advanced Program Guide is an on-screen listing of current and future programs for up to 14 days that are available from DIRECTV and your local digital stations. The DIRECTV High-Definition receiver offers you a comprehensive program list that contains information about programs with hundreds of channels.

Mini Guide: The Mini Guide is a special version of the Guide that displays only one channel at a time, and appears over the full-screen of the TV.

Channel Banner: The Channel Banner appears whenever you tune to a new channel or press the Info button on the remote while viewing a program. The banner lists all sorts of useful information, including: current date and time, current channel info (logo, number, call letters), program information (title, start and stop times, rating), audio options, messages, and parental control status.

Favorite Channels: This feature allows you to create a list of favorite channels that you store in memory. When using the Favorite Channels list, only those channels are displayed in the guide and tuned while channel surfing.

Channels I Get: You can set your DirecTV plus Receiver to display only the channels that are in your current subscription package.

Autotune: The autotune feature allows you to choose a program in the guide and have the tuner automatically tune to that channel at the appropriate time.

Category Sort: The on-screen guide can be set to list only programs in a particular category, such as movies, sports, news, etc.

Search Features: The "Find By" menu helps you locate a program by title, actor, channel, team (sports), or any other key word.

Date & Time: This option gives you a convenient way to jump several days ahead in the Guide, without having to scroll through pages of programs.

Pay Per View Programs: If your tuner is connected to a phone line, pay per view programming can be ordered using your remote and will appear on your next bill. The autotune feature can be used to automatically change to the proper channel. Once ordered, a pay per view program can be cancelled as long as no part of it has been viewed. An overview of your purchases can be seen as well.

Caller ID & Messages: If you have Caller ID service on your phone line, you can use your DIRECTV receiver to view phone calls you have received. The call log displays up to 25 recent incoming calls. When the Notification feature is activated, a notice appears on the TV screen whenever a call comes in. In addition, you can view messages that are sent from DIRECTV about new services or special program offerings.

Note: You must subscribe to Caller ID service through your local phone company and your DIRECTV Receiver must be connected to a phone line in order for this feature to work.

Auto Program (Channel Search): This feature automatically finds all the digital channels available through the antenna input and stores all the active channels in the channel list.

Parental Controls: These controls let you restrict what the children watch. Restricted programming is locked using a four digit code and the following settings are offered:

  • Block Channel: Blocks any channels you do not want to be viewed
  • Movie Rating: Blocks movies according to the movie ratings limit
  • TV Programs: Blocks TV programs based on the industry rating
  • Spending Limit: Sets the Pay Per View spending limit

DVR Features

Overview: The built-in HD DVR allows you to record both standard and high-definition content. You can record up to 200 hours of standard definition and 50 hours of high definition.

Live Buffer: The DIRECTV Plus HD DVR saves programs to the hard drive instantly and continuously, while you watch TV. This Live Buffer lets your pause, rewind, fast forward or instant replay for up to 90 minutes so you will never miss the action.

Cruise Controls: Use the Pause, FFWD, Rewind, Replay, Record and Advance keys to control your viewing time. Pressing FFWD or Rewind multiple times lets you increment the speed at which you cruise through a program. Pressing and holding Play shows the program in slow motion. If you press FFWD while a program is paused, the program is displayed in framed-by-frame.

Bookmarks: Bookmarks are a way of keeping track of places in a program you'd like to jump to quickly. You can create your own Bookmarks for the programs you have recorded so you can easily find certain scenes.

Recording Programs: Recording is a great way to see your favorite programs on your own schedule. Just set a program to record and your DirecTV Plus HD DVR will save it for you to watch later.

One-Touch Record: On any screen, you can press the Record key on a highlighted program to schedule a recording.

Autorecord Search: Programs that match a Search can be scheduled to autorecord. This way if the date and time of the program changes it won't matter because the DVR will record the program based on your Search criteria.

Playlist: The Playlist displays all saved, recorded programs in the MyVOD tab. You can select the program you want to watch by highlighting that program on the list.

Series Link: Episodic programs appear in the Playlist as groups. For example if you record a weekly program series, that series is shown in the list by its name, and the episodes for that series are saved in a group under that same name.

Disk Space Bar: The Disk Space Bar shows the approximate amount of space available on your hard-drive at any given time. The Bar displays the programs you have designated to keep in "blue", programs subject to expiration in "light blue" and the remaining unused space that is available for recording in "black".

Scheduler: This feature gives you an overview of and access to all the programs you've set to autorecord or purchase.

Remote Control

IR Remote Control: The supplied remote is a typical IR remote control. The remote must be pointed at the device to control it. The remote has TV controls so you can control the Power, TV Input and Volume of your television from the DIRECTV remote.
