About the Focal PS 165 FXE

The sound of flax

In their pursuit of sonic excellence, Focal discovered that a flax woofer cone produces a dynamic sound that's worthy of their reputation. At half the weight of fiberglass, these flax fibers help create a very rigid yet lightweight cone that ensures accuracy and limits unwanted vibrations.

Bi-amped system

Focal pre-wires the included external crossovers for an easier installation. Each crossover network also includes bi-amp connections, one for the woofer and one for the tweeter. When you power the woofers and tweeters separately, you'll gain even more clarity and impact from this component system.

Tuned mass damper

Focal knows that control is of the utmost importance to accurate sound. Their patented surround uses the "tuned mass damper" technology used to enhance the structural stabilization of earthquake-resistant skyscrapers — seriously!! With greater control of the woofer cone, you'll gain smoother, more natural sound.

Awesome power handling

This Flax Evo Series PS 165 FXE 6-1/2" component speaker system combine flax woofers with Focal's celebrated M-profile inverted dome tweeters. The inverted dome design of the tweeters mimics woofer-style sound dispersion, distributing the high frequencies in a wide pattern to create an exceptionally natural soundstage. The aluminum frame provides an incredibly rigid and non-resonant platform for these superior components. These speakers will handle up to 80 watts RMS, so powering them with an amplifier will really enhance their dynamic range.

Features

Woofer Size Classification: Some manufacturers, including Focal, call this size woofer a 6½". Because it requires a larger cutout than a standard 6½" speaker, Crutchfield has traditionally referred to this size woofer as a 6¾". Please enter your vehicle information to confirm fit.

Aluminum Basket: The woofers' cast aluminum baskets are rigid and non-magnetic.

Phase Plug: The bullet-shaped phase plug in the center of the woofer ensures a smooth, flat off-axis frequency response by preventing the high frequency sound waves emanating from one side of the cone from interfering with sound waves from the other side of the cone.

Surround: Each woofer uses a butyl rubber surround, resistant to ultraviolet rays, temperature extremes, and humidity to add to the speaker's reliability and longevity.

Tweeters: The tweeters have inverted Aluminum/Magnesium domes, producing a broad sound stage. They can be surface or flush mounted using the included adapters. The angled surface mount housings can be positioned at 25° or 45°.

Note: When flush mounted, the tweeters are pressure fit into the opening, with nothing holding them from behind, so the cutout diameter is very important.

Tweeter Dimensions:

  Flush Mount Angled Surface Mount
Mounting Height 0.393" 1.8"
Depth 0.425" (screw depth)
Frame Diameter 2.046" 2.07" x 2.15"
Cutout Diameter 1.572" N/A

Crossovers: Each crossover has screw terminal inputs and outputs that will accommodate bare wire or spade connectors up to 0.315" wide. (Speaker wire is not included with the system.) The output level of the tweeters is adjustable; choose 0 dB or -3 dB. The output level of midrange frequencies is also adjustable; choose 0 dB or -3 dB. The crossovers also have bi-amp inputs, one input for the tweeter and one for the woofer. When bi-amping the speakers, the input jumpers need to be removed. Using four amplifier channels to bi-amp the speakers typically improves the dynamic range and presents an easier load for the amp(s) to drive. The crossovers use 12 dB per octave low-pass and 18 dB per octave high-pass filters. The crossover point for both is 3 kHz.

Crossover Dimensions:

  • Width: 5⅜"
  • Height: 1⅝"
  • Depth: 4"

Customer Q&A

Q
I have these speakers as well as the coaxial set for the rears. I was going to get the Audio control D-6.1200 (125 Watts RMS x 6) and run the front active. Is that too much power for these? With a dsp amp can you tune the power down? Sorry I'm new to this!

No problem you just need to adjust the gain, you start with the gain all the way down and go from there to where it sounds good

I have the exact setup. you'll be fine.

That amp has dsp and Has enough power for those speakers

I have this exact set up with matching focal subwoofers. The audio control amplifier is an awesome amplifier, don't worry the focal speakers can take all that power. Plus, with the built in dsp you can manipulate the sound and staging just to your desired taste. If you ever consider matching the focal flax separates with the flax subwoofers, the audio control LC 800.1 is the perfect match. You have a very awesome set up so far, may you enjoy your system as much as i do.

This is called bi amp , so does that mean it'll need a 4 channel amp for the pair ? And does that also mean it only needs 40 watts per channel?

Just installed these running active with a JL VXI1000/5 amp. Its sounds AMAZING!!! this set brings me back to the original MB Quart Q Series days, but they are even better!!! Cant wait til they break in and can really play with the JL DSP TUN settings.

You can run these off of 2 channels, the crossovers come with jumpers installed. You can also run these off of 4 channels, but you would need to remove the jumpers. In either case, I would suggest running at least 80 watts per channel (either way will present a 4 ohm load to the amp). If your gains are set correctly (not clipping), then you could get away with running lower power to them in a bi-amp configuration. I do know there have been installers that have utilized as much as 125w/channel on these without an issue bi-amped.
