“For serenity, you must soothe at least three of the senses,” says Lisa Simeone, who designed the Waldorf Astoria Chicago’s spa, ranked third on our U.S. Hotel Spas list. Her sanity-saving buys:

Scrim “Use it to cordon off an area where phones and computers aren’t allowed. We’re so easily distracted that you need to limit your visual field. I like West Elm’s Faux Bois translucent, natural-printed cream curtains [from $39].”

Wingback Chair “The high back and arms hug you and afford some privacy. Try West Elm’s velvety, cushy Ellery Chair [$499].”

Cashmere Blanket “A tactile luxury. Muse’s throws are a worth-it splurge [$1,260].”

Sheepskin RugIKEA's small rugs are cheap but unbelievably lovely for sinking your feet into [$30].”

Pillows “Cover what you have with West Elm’s shaggy-soft Mongolian Lamb Pillow Covers—so luxurious [from $54].”

Scent “Jo Malone’s Acqua Di Limone Scent Surround Spray is citrusy and bright [$55].”

Table Lamps “Lowering lights is the best way to create coziness. Leave the overhead off whenever possible, and use a table lamp like this Terzani’s Orten’Zia silver-plated one: It washes walls with a fuzzy floral pattern that I absolutely love [$327].”

China “There’s something special about tea in antique china. Chicago’s Posh sells cups and saucers from old hotels [613 N. State St.; 312-280-1602].”

Still feeling askew? Rearrange: “Symmetry—like a couch flanked by end tables, with an artwork centered above—is calming,” Simeone says.
