What’s this place all about?
A 17th century Château and estate that spans over 800 hectares (1,977 acres). The Sun King's grand creation during his reign, the Palace is open for visits year-round and includes bedrooms, the King's state apartments, the Hall of Mirrors, and some 2,300 rooms in total. Beyond that, guests can visit the parks and gardens, the Trianon Estate, and the Royal Stables; the palace was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site 30 years ago. Annual summer exhibitions highlight the works of prominent contemporary artists like Jeff Koons, Anish Kapoor, and Olafur Eliasson, whose art is displayed in the sprawling gardens. The old and new come together beautifully, a nod to its initial mission to support artistic creations. Best to buy tickets online in advance (which vary according to how much you want to see), because lines can involve hours-long waits.

What’s it like being there?
Gilded, awe-inspiring, educational, and powerful.

Is there a guide involved?
Guided tours available upon request and for a fee.

Who comes here?
Everyone, literally everyone. This is a bucket-list destination even for French citizens. No matter how intense a historian someone might be, everyone is somewhat of a tourist when they visit.

What will you remember months from now?
Its epic proportions. This is a mind-blowing historic marvel, one of France's most opulent jewels that is so important to understanding the country's history and a very specific moment of leadership. One visit is unlikely to be enough to fully take in the estate, and it tends to leave a lasting impression that warrants a return visit or two.

So, then, what, or who, do you think it’s best for?
Great for first-time visitors, but not for super-short trips to Paris. To experience the Palace and the grounds properly, plan at least a full day. History buffs, art lovers, architecture students, and architects shouldn't miss it.
