Review: Parc des Buttes-Chaumont

Let’s start big picture. What’s the vibe here?
Unlike most of the rest of the major parks in Paris, this is a natural space without the rigid formality you might expect. Built on a former quarry, there are rocky elevations to traipse up with amazing views of the city, including Sacre Couer in nearby Montmartre. Popular with the locals, the park sits on almost 62 acres and was originally opened in 1867 as part of the Paris Universal Exposition.

Fun! Any standout features or must-sees?
For those without a fear of heights, check out the suspension bridge. Or seek out the dramatic waterfall capped with a temple to Sybille. If you are more in the mood to soak up ambience than get your steps in, make sure to stop at the ultra-popular café Rosa Bonheur, where the young and beautiful sip rosé from noon to the late hours of the evening.

Being in the 19th arrondissement, this is more off the beaten tourist path—which means you're having an authentic Parisian experience. But it's not going to be walking distance from other sights you're visiting most likely, so you need to be ok with a quick metro or taxi ride to get there.
