It has been 16 years since Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer retired from football.

While playing at the top of English football, the former striker created a number of impressive records. Some of them have now been broken by other players - but five of them still remain.

Most people will be aware that the 51-year-old still holds the Guinness World Record for the most Premier League goals. But can you list the other four records under his name?

Here are all of the current Guinness World Records held by Alan Shearer:

  • Most football (soccer) Premier League goals

The most goals scored in the English Premiership is 260 by Alan Shearer.

Shearer spent his Premiership career with Blackburn Rovers from 1992-96 before moving to Newcastle United in July 1996 for a record fee (at that time) of £15.6 million ($22.4 million), and retiring in 2006.

.He scored an additional 24 goals for Southampton in the old First Division before it became the Premiership.

  • Most successful penalties taken in the English Premier League

Alan Shearer holds the record for the most successful penalties taken in the English Premier League. He scored 56 penalties in the English Premier League (EPL) while playing for Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United between 1992 and 2006.

  • Youngest football (soccer) hat-trick scorer in the English top division

Alan Shearer remains the youngest hat trick scorer in the top division in England. He was 17 years and 240 days when he scored a hat-trick for Southampton against Arsenal on April 9, 1988.

  • Most goals by a football (soccer) player in an English Premier League season (42 games)

This record is held jointly by Alan Shearer and Andrew Cole. They both scored a total of 34 goals in an English Premier League season.

Cole achieved the record for Newcastle United in 1993/94 and Alan Shearer for Blackburn Rovers in 1994/95. The English Premier League contracted from 22 teams to 20 following the 1994/95 season.

  • Most goals scored in a football (soccer) Premier League match (individual)

Alan Shearer holds this record alongside four others - Andy Cole, Dimitar Berbatov, Jermain Defoe and Sergio Aguero. They have each scored five goals in a Premier League match.

The first was by Andy Cole for Manchester United versus Ipswich at Old Trafford in Manchester, UK, on March 4, 1995. The second was by Alan Shearer for Newcastle United versus Sheffield Wednesday at St. James' Park in Newcastle, UK, on September 19, 1999.

The third was by Jermain Defoe for Tottenham Hotspur versus Wigan Athletic at White Hart Lane in London, UK, on November 22, 2009. Just over a year later the fourth was by Dimitar Berbatov for Manchester United over Blackburn Rovers at Old Trafford in Manchester, UK, on November 27, 2010.

The fifth and most recent was by Sergio Agüero (Argentina) for Manchester City against Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, UK, on October 3. 2015.

Below are Guinness World Records held by Alan Shearer which have now been broken:

  • Most hat-tricks in a Premier League career

Alan Shearer previously held the record for the most hat-tricks in a Premier League career with 11 hat-tricks. His record was broken by Sergio Agüero while playing for Manchester City F.C. between September 10, 2011 and January 12, 2020. His 12th hat-trick came in a 6-1 thrashing of Aston Villa at Villa Park.

  • Most goals by a football (soccer) player in an English Premier League season (38 games)

The previous record for the most goals by a football player in an English Premier League season was 31. It was shared by Alan Shearer, Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Suárez and Mohamed Salah. Salah broke the record when he achieved 32 goals while playing for Liverpool in the 2017/18 season.

  • Most self-portrait photographs (selfies) taken in three minutes

Alan Shearer and Newcastle School for Boys set a record of 134 selfies taken in three minutes in April 2017. They took on the challenge to celebrate the students' achievements and raise money for The Alan Shearer Foundation. A mass of school kids, aged between three and 18, lined up at the nearby South North Cricket Club in Gosforth while the former striker prepared to take the selfies on his iPhone.

The rules for this title state that the photographer’s face must be fully visible in all snaps and have a different additional person in each one. After a few near misses, the boys eventually managed to break the record by a single selfie to set a new record of 134.

The record is now held by James Smith, from the United States, who achieved 168 aboard the Carnival Dream cruise ship on January 22, 2018. James is an avid cruiser who held this attempt on the deck of one of his latest cruise vacations.
