A “STOPPIE” also known as a “Nose Wheelie” is another very cool trick you can master on a dirt bike with lots of practice. The key to accomplishing a successful stoppie is knowing and getting a feel for your front brake. Obviously, other factors will go into your technique but understanding how much front brake to give is a major one.

We’ll discuss 4 key steps to get you to accomplish a stoppie!

⚠️WARNING ⚠️
THIS TRICK IS ONLY RECOMMENDED FOR VERY EXPERIENCED RIDERS, DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS TRICK IF YOU ARE NOT EXTREMELY COMFORTABLE DOING FREESTYLE MANEUVERS ON YOUR MOTORCYCLE. PERFORMING FREESTYLE MANEUVERS CAN RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURIES.

Approach:

When you begin to attempt a stoppie it is very important you are in a setting that is smooth and obstacle free. Starting off you’ll want a bit of a grade up and then a mellow jump landing or gentle downward sloping hill. A little bit of a slope is ideal when attempting this trick as it will make it so much easier. Typically your speed should be about 25-30mph but when you’re learning we recommend taking it a little slower.

Pop up:

With any trick you do on your bike body positioning is very crucial. Sit down with a straight upper body elevated a bit off of the seat. Be prepared to transfer your body weight from the rear of the bike to the front slightly, once you’ve slightly leaned forward you’ll begin to pull the front brake in until you feel the back wheel to ride off of the ground.

Controlling:

When we say control we mean to control your bike to go in a straight line and ride for a few feet. This will come the more and more times you attempt a stoppie. You don’t want to be all over the place when trying to bring the bike up. Keep holding the front brake lever until you want to go back down to ground level.

Practice:

As we’ve mentioned and will continue to mention when first learning you’ll want to take it slow. You don’t have to lift your bike up off of the floor so much when you are first practicing. Practice until you’ve got the techniques down and eventually your stoppies will get higher and longer. Practice. Practice. Practice. No one ever got better from just staring at the bike.

Stoppie Time

Start off small as there is no need to go full speed when you’re just learning. Mistakes can send you right over the handlebars and we don’t want that. Eventually, you’ll find the right spot that you’re comfortable with and try to hold the stoppie a little bit longer. Ultimately you’ll get the balance point down and also you’ll familiarize yourself on how to hold the brake well enough to ride out a stoppie. Remember that learning new moves like this one takes time and confidence but once you’ve got it down you will have one of the most stylish ways to stop a dirt bike!
