This version is very interesting. Although the stages are the same, the music is completely different from the Sega Genesis version. The special stages are completely different. They are also much harder! Definitely give this a go if you've played and enjoyed the Genesis version.

This game is unfortunately the victim of much criticism, often seen as nothing more than a lazy Genesis port. As I play it, I come to the conclusion that had the game been released exclusively for the Saturn, it could have been much more well received than it was. True, the main gameplay is all but the same, but all the care that was put into creating the Saturn version truly turned it into a good game.

First of all, the control is much better here: both the 3d controller and the model 1 controller work very well with the game. The visuals are one of the most noticeable differences. The environments are vibrant and stunning and there's many little things that really impress me: probably the best example is on the second zone Rusty Ruin: the fog and rain effects on this level are brilliant and really create a mood that just isn't present on the Genesis game. The music is another exceptional part of the game, however, as many people also love the Genesis version's music, it really comes down to personal preference here.

The absolute best thing about this game however that makes this version superior is the special stages! They have the same objective as Sonic 2 special stages however things are much improved: everything is in full 3d and looks great! You also aren't purely limited to moving left and right in a half pipe, now there are springs, platforms, and awesome corkscrew tunnels. Even when you've got all the chaos emeralds you'll be finding yourself looking for Tails and Knuckles so you can play these levels some more!

There is one downside to this version which forces me to give 4 stars instead of 5: the loading times! It's especially maddening when you complete a special stage: first you wait for it load a while, then it displays a "loading" screen, and then finally you get back to the game!

If you're a Saturn owner I highly recommend this one. Yes it's unfortunate we never got Sonic X-Treme, but I for one am glad Sega did at least give us this awesome and many times superior port!

Amazon don't let you do half stars for some reason so let me say this is a strong three and a half game. The Saturn version has pretty graphics and awesome special stages. Some very fun levels. You can run fast and avoid danger at blistering speed once you get the hang of it. Still the loops and stuff like that during the regular levels should have been more integrated into the gameplay. And more plentiful.Thats my main issue with this one. still a good game and the special stages and zones 2 and 4 make up for alot of the parts that arnt as good as they should have been. I think the developers got scared The platforming would be too hard on an isometric 3d game so they toned it down on those levels.

You might think that you have this game already, but you do not and yet you kinda do if that makes any sense. You might have this game for the sega genesis or on a newer system they are all the same version except for this one for sega saturn. The only difference is that more little details are added and the sound track has been replaced by a much better one.The colors have been changed and the bridge instead of being stationary moves and creeks. So it is the same game with some modifacations, which makes it the best version of this game. Sadly though the only way to play this game is with a sega saturn and if you are like me you are running out of connections in the back of the tv.

Love this game, and it's a shame they never ported this version of it. It arrived on time and plays like it's new. Wish I could use a save state, but I like the authentic saturn experience too.

I got the game very fast, as Amazon always does to me, it came a day before it said it would, so.....yay!
The plot is that Sonic must save the Flickies from Dr, Ivo Robotnik, who wants them to find the Chaos Emerald by putting the birds in robots who find the emeralds by......spinning in circles. Anyways, the game has FMV custscenes (while there are only 2 short ones, their still cool to look at) The game is almost a copy and paste port of the Sega Genesis title of the same name. The game is in an isometric view point, and you control Sonic and you wander the levels to destroy the robots and rescue the Flickes inside. The graphics are a MAJOR overhaul, with more vibrant colors, and CD-Quality sound, not to mention the best special stages in the series! But, the load times will conquer your patient. I did a small side by side comparison to the two versions of this game. I completed the first zone (2 levels, 1 boss) of the Genesis version, before I even completed the 2nd level! The load times crush the 5 star rating. But it is worth it, especially if you have lots of time to waste.

What could be better than playing Sonic? Playing it on a Sega! This game combines the classic plot line with incredibly enhanced graphics (3D). Definitely a must have for Sega Saturn owners.
