I'm a huge fan of SEGA's racing games. I've poured countless quarters into Daytona USA and Virtua Racing in the Arcades and bought countless SEGA racing games for every platform imaginable. I'm also a huge fan of the Saturn Racing games SEGA produced in particular as they are some of the greatest racing games ever made. I regularly play Manx TT, Hang-On, Sega Rally, etc. Is this game another winner for Saturn racing fans that deserves your love and attention? Well...
The graphics on this game are nowhere near the level of Sega Rally, and even Manx TT and F1 Challenge look more solid in this respect. Like F1 challenge the graphics are a bit dim in contrast though quite colorful. They are also choppy and very fast which on the one hand looks a bit sloppy, and on the other results in a wonderful sense of speed (which might have improved F355 Challenge on Dreamcast years later). The result is that, at first glance, this game appears to be garbage. However!
There are only three tracks and a couple of cars. There's a qualifying lap, and then an arcade-style timed two laps before you are pushed on to the next track. There's awesome old-school SEGA arcade music with the signature singing you loved so much in Outrun 2 and Sonic R (wait, only I loved that singing?). The controls are touchy like all the Saturn racing games of the era and you'll be doing plenty of power-sliding and drifting. The options are somewhat limited but there ARE car customizations you can make (and like me will probably ignore). All of this is is just window dressing because...
The game grows on you like all the Sega Racing games of the era. You get used to the lightning sense of speed and twitchy controls, and start to get addicted to the fantastic gameplay. The game works beautifully with the analog controller, and you find yourself playing again and again to get just a little bit better. Yes, this game is actually enjoyable and well worth playing if you like Saturn racing games. That said...
This is clearly not as polished a title as Sega Rally or heck even Hang-On GP or Manx TT. It is good, but with a little more work it could have been something truly special. Get all the other Saturn Racing games first, then get this game to complete your collection.
