Goldberg's' tone and musicianship are superb - I have his recordings with Kraus which are seminal performances. Lupu is the current ideal partner . Actually these sonatas are for piano and violin. The duo understands Mozart's intentions The give and take between the two provides great pleasure to the listener. I find that this set is definitive,

A superb rendition. Pianist and violinist worked very well together, neither dominating.

I am not sure why it took me over 10 years to acquire this set. I remember reading something about the set in either the Penguin Guide or Grammaphone Classical Good Guide back in the day. Well, better late than never. I love the performance. I love the recording and I love the price! It is definitely a keeper. If you are into Mozart, violin sonata, or just great classical in general, I don't think you can be disappointed with this set. I will be listening to this set for years to come.

My favorite sets of the Mozart sonatas remains those of Haebler/Szeryng Philips and Frankl/Pauk/Vox. Other valuable non sets include sonatas played
by David Oistrakh, Leonid Kogan, and Sviatoslav Richter. Also recent remasterings of the six sonatas with Arthur Grumiaux and Clara Haskil
(k 301, 304, 376, 378, 454 and 526 in which the sound is superior to that on lp in which Haskil sounded muffled). I think that all of the violinists
above sound more attractive technically than Szymon Goldberg , an excellent violinist for most of his career (try his Mozart trios with Lili Kraus). He recorded
this set too late (// Rudolf Serkin's Mozart concerti with Abbado/DG). One can try to focus on the attractive playing of Lupu, but I find the effort
wearying. For those who react differently to Goldberg here, the set would definitely be worth auditioning, I would start with four of the final five
k379 (with the greatest opening of all of the vp sonatas), 454, 481 and 526. 3.5 stars

When it comes to classical music recordings, I only have 2 absolutes-get the notes right and stay on pitch. Everything else is negotiable. Sadly, this recording has all too frequent occurances of the latter. Which is a great shame as Radu Lupu's piano work is outstanding, perfectly suited for Mozart. The violinist however, simply wasn't up to the task. There are very few instruments that shiver the spine when off-key like a violin. This collection has those moments in virtually every movement. It is one of the very few recordings I've ever heard where it's hard to figure why it was ever put on disc, or continued after the 1st day of recording for that matter. With so many other collections available, look elsewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Une des références.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wunderbares Zusammenspiel
Reviewed in Germany on March 3, 2016

5.0 out of 5 stars Creamy Silken Playing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 22, 2009
Mozart wrote 42 sonatas for violin and piano. This set contains all 16 sonatas written between 1778 and 1788 - the most important ones. Excluded in this set are the 16 very early sonatas of 1762-1766, which are in an old style and not interesting. It also excludes the sets of variations of 1781 K360/374b, and all the incomplete sonatas and fragments. The style of these performances is very gentle and poetic. The instruments are extremely well balanced without the piano overpowering, but all the same it remains in the foreground, which is as it should be, since these are really sonatas for piano WITH violin in an equilibrated dialogue of equality for both instruments. And here in these performances the balance is perfect. Both Lupu and Goldberg concentrate on beauty of tone and delicate and poetic phrasing in interpretations, which are extremely creamy and silken. These performances will at times carry you off into the Divine world. This is the reference set for these works in my opinion, although some of these sonatas are also very well performed by Grumiaux and Klein and by Szeryng and Hameling, however for consistency in all of the works the Lupu and Goldberg performances are the best interpretations and have the best recorded sound and correct instrument balance of the 3 choices. A lifetime investment. Essential recordings!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning value for a musical experience to last a lifetime
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 21, 2013
This box set of all Mozart's mature Sonatas for piano and violin is astonishing. It reveals the deep pleasure of music making, the mutual respect between two outstanding musical personalities of different generations, and some of the greater insights into sublime music that have been set down. The balance and the joy are breath-taking, and from beginning to end, it's hard to imagine the works being played differently. In the same way that Mozart's music has an inevitability, so does this set.

Rich, mellow analogue sound from 1975.

All that is lacking from this magnificent production is a biography of the performers. It's worth searching the internet for some information on Goldberg. Born in Poland in 1909, and leader of the Berlin Philharmonic at the age of 20! Forced to leave the orchestra in 1934, while he was touring Asia with pianist Lili Kraus, he was interned in Java by the Japanese from 1942-45, later became an American citizen but continued to work in Europe too.

For this set alone, he deserves a place in the hearts and minds of music lovers. Desert Island performances.
