A Solid Game. The Payne Is Back With Bullet Time.

A Solid Game. The Payne Is Back With Bullet Time.
It was 2003 when Max Payne 2 came out, a sequel to a bloody, faul language game that had me go through its campaing at least 12 times. Bullet time was my old time favorite, and going through some of Max's darkest dreams was always a riddle on its own...Now Max Payne 3 is here..we find an older Max, boozed and high on pills, the same old demons inside his head...His old self in a brand new game...Max Payne 3 will take you for a wild ride from the minute you start until the very end. I started playing the game last night at midnight and haven't been able to put it down until now; a solid single player will keep you on your toes and the various multiplayer options will keep you occupied for many hours to come. The story begins with Max finding himself working in Brazil for a private security company looking after a real state big shot, whom puts Max in charge of his wife's security..of course, she is kidnapped..and that's as far as I will go...NO SPOILERS here. The main story is great, it will keep you intrigued from start to end, I can't go into much detail, but I can promise you this, it is a wild ride. You will be taken from Brazil to the US and back. The story will unfold in ways you won't expect and I guarantee you will like every bit of it, I can't say more without spoiling it, so I'll stop with one phrase, get ready, this is the best Payne so far. An explosive end awaits you.The game looks amazing, from face animation to environments, everything has been done with extreme detail and it truly paid off for Rock Star, this is an A++ game. From shadows, to night lights, to gun battles, you will have plenty of eye candy to enjoy; it is a gorgeous game.If you have a surround sound system, get ready to get your face melted; the deep bass and sharp bullets sounds make this an experience like no other. The voice work is top notch filled with plenty of faul language and taunts, it's the old payne we knew from before. One of my favorite aspects of the game, sound wise, is the background music, a bit slow mo samba, with a twist of drama, keeps the atmosphere in suspense, the music caliber of hollywood big budgets; the voice work, specially from the locals, is dead on, Portuguese is spoken and NOT translated, giving the game a true authenticity the reflects what you would feel in that situation when you find yourself in a foreign land not knowing the language and its slangs. A true masterpiece.I'm happy to report that the controls are solid, I had no issues popping fools left and right and best of all, BULLET TIME is back! oh yeah, fans of the series will be pleased and new comers will know what's all about. Bullet time gives Max the ability to slow down battle time and shoot your way out of tricky situations. You basically have a Bullet Time meter that gets used every time, but can be filled by killing enemies or when you're getting shot at. The covering systems is as good as always, but this time be careful, some cover can be destroyed and will leave you out in the open, so be prepared to move quickly. Rockstar added a "Final Kill Camera" which basically will let you know that you've cleared and area, you can slow the camera down for a more intense view :)The game is rated "M" for mature and for good reason, there's plenty of booze, pills and sexual themes to go abound, so make sure under age kids don't play this. Max has to actually take pain killers as means to recover health (like good old times)Targetting is has three stages, Hard Lock, which will lock whatever enemey is closer to you; Soft Lock, requires you to aim closer to targets and OFF, which basically turns targetting assistance off.Enemy AI, I was worried at first, but again, RockStar has pulled it off, there's nothing dumb about those fools. They will take cover and try their best to make you bleed.Multiplayer: The multiplayer aspect of this game is fun and addictive and it has the following modes and sub-modes:Matchmaking: Join or creat your own party/game.PlayLists:Traning modes...deathmatch and team deathmatch for players new to the whole Max Payne MP experience (basically all of us)DeathMatch: every gangster for himselfTeam DeathMatch: Work with your gang to kill your rivalsPayne Killer: a blend of co-op and competetive play. The game starts with a standoff, whoever kills first, gets to be Max Payne and Raul Passos.Large DeathMatch: up to 16 players killing each other.Large Team DeathMatch: same as above, but in teams.Gang Wars (my favorite:Key events from the single player story are used as start off points. Gang Wars has the following:Warfare... all out battle for supremacyShowdown... battle to the death, the gang's strength depends on the previous roundsSurvivor....limited team livesLast Stand... each gang member has only ONE life.TakeDown... a target based mode. Take out the target and kill everybody else.Short Fuse... arm a bomb and protect the one doing it.Delivery...both gangs must collect and deliver items to a locationGrab....gangs fight to capture two bags and delivery themTurf Grab....battle for turfTotal Turf...fight for multiple turf sectionsSiege...pinned, one gang must hold on to 3 territories.Passage... one gang runs for their life while being hunted by the other (one of my favorites)If you want sex, alcohol, drugs, psycho episodes and plenty of blood, then Max Payne 3 is for you; a complete game by all means. Great story, awesome mechanics, gore and Bullet Time...Max is defenitely back.So there you have it, another solid game from the dudes at Rock Star, these guys have been in business for a long time and they always deliver. Kudos to them.

You know that feeling you get when you hear another Twilight, Transformers, or Adam Sandler movie is coming out? That's how I felt when I saw the box art for Max Payne 3 a couple of years ago. Then I found out my beloved Remedy was having no hand in its creation, and I was even more...well, disgusted, to be honest. Why resurrect a franchise that doesn't need another iteration? The second Max Payne ended the story sufficiently enough, right? Well yeah, it did. But regardless of whether or not it was wanted or needed, the world now has Max Payne 3, and it is excellent. Of any studio that could have gotten their hold on Max Payne, I can't really imagine anyone besides Rockstar doing it justice.

Max Payne is an aging, angry, drunk, pill-popping ex-cop with a dead family and a lot of bullets in his gun. I think the weakest overall part of Max Payne 3 is that like I said, this game really isn't necessary. And because of that, the game jumps back to various points in his past in order to establish how he went from being a fixture in every bar in New York City to working a security detail in Sao Paolo, Brazil. That part of the plot feels forced. Rockstar obviously needed to do something to explain the shift in setting, and they did it as well as they could have, but if I had a complaint, it would be that. Or to say it another way, if this game had never been released, I would be okay with that. It's very entertaining in multiple ways, but unnecessary. Kind of like Halo 4 coming out. Not really needed. However, I don't mind if games aren't needed and come out anyways, as long as they aren't lazy and obviously only to make a lot of money.

So on to the game. The levels are varied, there are multiple involving vehicles, the graphics are excellent, and it even pays homage to the previous two games, which any Max Payne 1 and 2 fans will appreciate. Rockstar even did a sort of comic-book-cutscene hybrid that works well enough. Throughout all of the many cutscenes in the game though, when Max is narrating, some of the words he or others say will flash up on the screen, and most of the time it feels kind of useless. When I first started playing I thought for sure there was going to be some revelation at the end of the game, where it flashes back to all of the things that were written and it all sort of comes together and makes sense. But it becomes apparent pretty quickly that it's purely for the style the game was trying to capture, and that they don't really mean anything aside from adding atmosphere.

As with the previous games, this one has a very dark sense of humor, and some of the lines in it were particularly good. If you aren't familiar or just don't like noir in general, you might not like or understand the game. All of Max Payne's narration is over the top, and the writing is pure gold. There are so many lines that made me laugh, but even comedy aside, the story is excellent. And while it's not realistic for one man to kill hundreds (if not thousands) of people trying to kill him right back, the story itself is realistic enough.

The graphics, as mentioned, are also superb. There are many instances of overexposure or disjointed image quality, illustrating how messed up Max is because of all the painkillers and alcohol. It's really an atmosphere thing, and they aren't used so much it becomes irritating. Gunplay is also great fun. I haven't had this much fun targeting specific body parts since Grand Theft Auto IV (also Rockstar). This is going to seem really petty, given that the game is nearly flawless, but for all the blood and realistic way in which bullets interact with the people you're shooting, I was surprised and (very) slightly disappointed that it wasn't possible to actually shoot off specific body parts. I assume it must have something to do with how complex the bullet/body physics of the game already are, and it's really only a very mild point.

The health system is the same as the previous two games, which I was actually surprised and quite happy about. Instead of entering a red state when taking too much damage and waiting for it to pass under cover, there is a small representation of Max's body in the lower right hand corner that fills up with red after each time you get shot. If you have painkillers and take enough damage to fill it up completely, you'll enter Man-Down State, in which you find yourself on your back and have to shoot the person who last shot you. It is quite well done, and feels very natural. The rest of the enemies will be much more grey and unassuming, while the one you are supposed to shoot will still be colored, so it's usually not too difficult. If you have no painkillers and take too much damage, you just die. When you play the game on Old School difficulty, however, Man Down State is disabled, and if you take too much damage, you die, just as the first two games. Very challenging.

Just like the first two games, this one also has controls that can be frustrating at times, especially when you're trying to exit cover and run in a particular direction. For some reason, you'll run in the opposite direction you intended if you try to do things too quickly. But not doing it quickly enough of course, means more time you're spending absorbing enemy bullets. On harder difficulties, it is easily the biggest negative aspect of the game, but to be honest, I didn't mind so much, because the sluggish (at times) controls reminded me of the first two games.

If this is your Max Payne game, you won't be lost. Pretty much all relevant backstory is explained in the opening cutscene, and the edges are more defined during flashbacks to his past. Overall this is one of the best games I've played so far this year, and if you're a fan of the series already, noir, shooting, pill-popping, excessive drinking, bad dance music, or making things blow up real good, you should probably at least give this game a rent. It's worth your time.

I played and thoroughly enjoyed Max Payne 2. Remedy did a fantastic job, and I was disappointed that the fall of Max Payne went mostly unnoticed. Thankfully, Rockstar noticed, and if the second game was Max's fall, than the third starts with him at rock bottom. Max Payne 3 revels in its status as Noir, and that aspect defines every aspect of its presentation. Color shifts, dynamic camera work, voice overs, and bullet time are all dripping in hard boiled coating and it is wonderful. The atmosphere is constant and pervasive, doing as much story telling as the spot on voice acting. From the wealthy, decadent clubs and yachts to the filthy and hopeless streets, the level design never fails to impress. Thankfully, the gameplay is even better.

What you point at, Max can shoot. You would be surprised how many games fumble on that basic concept, but Max Payne takes it a step further. Bullet time and shoot dodge combine to make a combat engine that, when done correctly, is not just fast, fun, and efficient; it can be downright beautiful. There is a fully functional cover system, that you will most definitely need, but this is not a cover based shooter. Kick down a door, run into a room, activate bullet time, and head shot the first three closets bad guys. When the other five men with guns react, shoot dodge behind the nearest cover, taking out another two as you go. Not letting grass grow under their feet, the enemy AI will be on you in an instance. As they leave cover to flank you, surprise them buy jumping onto the desk you're hiding behind, and shoot dodge forward, diving through the air taking one guy out. You look for the other guy, but he managed to get behind you. You practically pirouette while still in mid air, doing a full one eighty and pump him full of lead before hitting the ground and sliding across the floor, still on your back, guns raised and ready for the next wave of bad guys that come flooding through the door. Thankfully, you didn't waste precious time getting up. Still prone on your back, you unload on the door, taking several of them out, sending the rest into cover, giving you valuable time to do the same. The scenario I just described was not one of the games many fantastic scripted events; that is every encounter.

There are many scripted events, none of which I will spoil, that give the game a summer blockbuster feel that never gets old. The characters you are close to, you will grow attached to. The enemies are ruthless and you will come to hate them. The story is strong but nothing revolutionary. There are golden gun parts to find, grinds ( or stunts) to perform, and every level is different. There are only a couple of problems.

Firstly, Max Payne has never been an easy game, but Max Payne 3, at times, can be downright brutal. Granted, I did play on hard my first time through, but there are still two difficulty levels above that! Casual gamers, or those not great at shooters, be warned; this game is absolutely unforgiving. The second problem ties directly into the first. You will die in this game, many, many times. A part of dying is waiting for the considerable load times, and having to watch the many, wonderfully done cutscenes over, and over, and over again. There is an option to skip some of them, but by the time the game has loaded enough to do so, they will be practically over. Max Payne is not a short game, but the frequent deaths couple with the soul draining load times and cutscenes will make it feel much longer, and for many, will deter repeat playthroughs.

I have not played the multiplayer myself, but have heard good things. if I ever have occasion to dip my toe in, I will update this review.

Bottom line, Max Payne is the most polished, challenging, rewarding, third person shooter out today, and you owe it to yourself to experience it. A definite buy.

I know it says for India version Xbox only but it works fine on my Xbox 360 brought from the UK. So for me it's a good buy. Got it 230 bucks which is a steal. Gameplay and story is great. Graphics are amazing but I feel it could be better. Great game though already played a few hours.

Max Payne 3!
