MARIE JEANNE PALIPON ROLAND (Manon was her pet name) was born in Paris, March 18, 1754, to bourgeoisie parents. Marie was a precocious child. Her parents were pleased, and provided her with master teachers for her education. When as a young woman, she began to go out into the world; she was disillusioned by the “shocking” hollowness, pretensions, and patronizing insincerity of aristocratic society.Miss Tarbell probes intricately into the subject of her suitors and eventual marriage. In 1776 she met M. Roland de la Platière, an inspector-general of commerce. Before the year was over, they visited Roland's family in the Beaujolais, and the next year found them settled in Amiens. Here their only child, Eudora, was born, in October 1781. Their life in Amiens was quiet and provincial. Roland wrote articles for the “Encycopédie Méthodique" and Madame Roland read Rousseau. ‘Books were the elevation of Madame Roland; books were her ruin,’ concluded some observers.Becoming interested in politics when the French Revolution broke out in 1789, the Rolands spent time in Lyon. Here she developed a network of contacts with politicians and journalists. In 1791, the couple settled in Paris, where Madame Roland became a leading figure within the political group, the Girondins, one of the more restrained revolutionary factions. Known for her intelligence and judicious political analyses, she was convinced of her own intellectual and moral superiority and alienated political leaders like Robespierre and Danton. Miss Tarbell explores the turbulent private life of Madame Roland. A passionate romance had developed between her and the Girondin deputy François Buzot. This affected her bond with her husband, who found the awareness that his wife was in love with another man difficult to bear. Her influence increased even more when Monsieur Roland became Minister of the Interior in 1792, a bureau created to influence public opinion. Madame Roland had no sympathy for 'hooligans' like the Jacobin and the Montagnard extremist factions. She was admired by the moderates and hated by the radicals. In June 1793, she was the first Girondin to be arrested during the Terror and was guillotined a few months later.Of this book, the ‘Catholic Quarterly Review’ wrote, “From a Christian standpoint one is more and more saddened, as one follows the author’s deep probe into Madame Roland's life, especially that she made shipwreck of her faith as she did. She had remarkable, superior natural gifts. With the guiding principle of the faith for reason and for sentiment, what errors and extravagances she might have been saved from! How much purer a reputation she might have left behind! Her pride and self-sufficiency were the source of her spiritual downfall. She came under the control of free-thinking authors, and thus she illustrates the care which all need to exercise over their own reading or that of others whom they can influence. In her ambition, she followed a dream of liberty and equality, and she saw the dream come to naught.
