Easy-to-read LCD 8mm (.932") high characters. Hardened, stainless steel bar for long life. Depth attachment PT08680A available for measuring depth of holes, slots, and recesses. Fine adjustment thumb roll for precision measurements. Rounded nose scriber cuts clean, sharp lines with smoothness and less pressure. Lock to hold the slide in position. Hardened, ground, and lapped base with fi nger grooves provides ease of movement. Easy access to single long-life battery, 3-volt CR2032. Vertical bar is back from the edge of the nose for better stability. Scriber can reference zero from the bottom of the base to get the full 6" (150mm) usable range. The digital height gauge is a nice addition to my shop. It allows me to use this for small jobs without having to break out my expensive 24" Mitutoyo gauge. There are few niggles I took away a single star for. 1st, its made in China, while not a deal breaker it concerns me that Starrett is continuing to move in that direction. 2nd, the display is vertical vice horizontal like my Mitutoyo. Again, not a deal breaker and I knew that when I bought it. 3rd, the gauge doesn't include an offset scribe for setting zero from the surface plate. Its an option that must be ordered. Lastly, I was a little annoyed that there wasn't a battery included with the gauge. Probably an oversight, but part of the problems you run into when using Chinese manufacturers.

Well, it's basically a $100 digital caliper mounted on a precision-machined steel base. A pricey deal considering, but it was $230 for Starrett or $600 for Mitutoyo, for what's probably about the same quality.

I do precision CNC work, where the ability to make precise thickness measurements in reference to the machine table is useful; it's also somewhat handy for other hobby projects, but is likely an overkill compared to  cheaper but still competent tools .

In any case, went with Starrett, it performs great and gives precise and repeatable results - so no regrets.

PS. Since the scriber holder (the rectangular piece with a set screw) doesn't actually sit flat when tightened, you have to remove it for most uses.

Works great, my only complaint is that the scribe doesn’t lower to the bottom of the base. I plan on making one or ordering a replacement from another height gauge and hoping it fits. I do a lot of stuff where I need to scribe closer to the surface plate than this allows and I overlooked it when buying.
