Nausea is not only the title of Jean-Paul's Sartre novel but also its main theme. In this piece of work, Antoine Roquentin, seeking his self-identification, and attempting to better understand life, expresses his thoughts and questions from what he observes in his surrounding. He experiences the feeling of nausea for numerous reasons but, this analysis focuses on four of the principal causes of that awkwardness which are: his face, his spirit, certain colors and his existence. Roquentin spends time contemplating his face and this examination makes him perplexed because he is unable to explain why he is so ugly. This hideous face, so supernatural and incomprehensible as he puts it, causes him to experience the feeling of nausea mainly because he is unable to judge it without paying attention to the judgment of others: "Je ne peux même pas décider s’il est beau ou lait. Je pense qu’il est laid, parce qu’on me l’a dit.» (33, 34) Roquentin's psyche also causes him nausea because he feels that everything he notices around him and everything happening to him is repetitive and absurd. The nausea of the mind has a metaphorical meaning, representing the feeling of dissatisfaction felt by the narrator. The narrator's nausea is also associated with certain colors, for example, the mixture of blue and maroon makes him uncomfortable, most likely due to the fact that they are neither happy nor sad. The observation of the mixture of such colors, undoubtedly, amplifies his feelings of non-belonging. This is why, speaking about them, he says: "Ça aussi donne la nausée. Ou plutôt c’est la nausée." (38) In addition, Roquentin despises himself because he is unable to understand the reason for his existence. His soul is filled with feelings of loneliness and rejection which give him the impression of being restrained or bindered: « Je me sentais entouré d’un décor de carton. » In essence, the feeling of nausea represents the manifestation of self-identification problem faced by the narrator. Even though a miraculous awareness-raising phenomenon happened to Roquentin, he remains doubtful about his future. this is the reason why he uses the conditional tense to express this incertitude saying: « Et j’arriverais - au passé, rien qu’au passé à m’accepter. » (250) By Nick Myrca Malebranche-Gauthier

The present thesis is based on the hypothesis that Jean-Paul Sartre revives his phenomenological theories postulated in his essay La transcendance de l'Ego by applying them to his diary novel La nausée. Additionally, other existential theories are discussed in the novel in order to complete it on the content level. Thus, finding out why phenomenological discoveries are reflected in the fictional context of a diary novel constitutes the major task of this thesis. The analysis comprises the linguistic realizations of the respective theories in terms of narrative and argumentative strategies pertinent to the two genres as well as the positioning of the texts in the taxonomy of fictionality and factuality. Principally, Sartre uses the genre of the diary novel as he aims at exploiting its fictional as well as factual features in order to benefit his endeavor of mediating his philosophical discoveries. Although Sartre breaks with the narratological conventions of the diary novel by em...

The current article proposes to take a closer look at this preface, entitled “Orphée noir”, which, in retrospect, offers one of the most original readings of the Negritude movement, and demonstrates a natural prolongation not only of Sartre’s thought, but also of his experience of alienation during the Occupation. The existential experience of the Occupation is structurally similar to the lived experience of colonization, to the extent that both force individuals to face the same pain, harassment and constraint. This is why, it seems to us, Sartre was able to solidly understand, and to a certain degree, develop an authentic attachment to the poetry and literature of the Negritude movement. From this perspective, we permit ourselves to suggest that Sartre’s reading is not simply one among many, but rather a lucid and profound reading of what is still at work in the movement; a programmatic reading, in short. Sartre’s “Orphée noir” reminds us that the Negritude movement cannot be ‘completed’ or assigned to a moment in history – it is all of history. It necessarily continues to inform the higher level of actuality (the becoming) of Black literature, which in turn means one can describe the entire history of that literature following the ternary model of dialectical auto-realization (i.e., the Domination position of the master / the Revolt of the slave / the Overcoming of that contradiction), with all the interesting ideological, philosophical, literary and linguistic variations that result.
