Confucius Lies? Kwan: Did Socrates ever tell a lie? Agassi: No. Kwan: Confucius did. Socrates did not lie, and was murdered by democracy. Jesus did not lie, and was murdered by rabbis. Confucius lied and escaped. The King of Wei (衛王) forced Confucius to swear on leaving Wei not to go into Wei’s enemy state. Under duress Confucius swore. Upon leaving Wei, he right away went into Wei’s enemy state. Confucius’s disciple Zilu challenged Confucius for not keeping his promise. Confucius said, “要誓不盟 Oath under threat is not binding. 要盟也, 神不聽 It’s an oath under threat. The gods don’t listen to it.” Kwan: Is it ever right to tell a lie? Agassi: Telling a lie to save an innocent life is not only a need but also a must. KWAN Lihuen Canada 2021-04-09
