Lola Montes was a famous dancer who visited Australia during the gold rush of the 1850s, but this portrait was painted in Europe.

King Ludwig I of Bavaria requested that his court painter create a portrait to show Lola's famous beauty. To be the subject of a large oil painting like this was a great sign of prestige and wealth. In its grand gold-leaf frame, the portrait depicts a quiet and graceful Lola, far from her noisy reputation.

Things to think about

  1. 1.

Compare the painting of Lola Montes with the drawing shown in the clip. How have the two artists portrayed Lola? What is different or alike? Does either image give you a clue that Lola is a dancer? How?

  2. 2.

Why do you think Lola had to leave Bavaria when King Ludwig abdicated? Can you find out more about her life? Do you think Lola's portraits have captured her outrageous life?

  3. 3.

Do you think some kinds of portraits are more valuable and prestigious (making the person in the portrait look important and impressive) than others? Do you think paintings are more prestigious than photographs? Why?
