About the Pub

The Howtown Hotel, run by the Baldry family for 120 years, was a delightfully old-fashioned hotel located on the shores of Ullswater. It is now only trading for private functions at weekends, but the Walkers Bar is open when the Tea Shop is staffed. If no one is behind the bar a sign asks customers to ask for service in the Tea Shop, where someone will walk across and serve you.

The Tea shop closes in early November and reopens again at Easter, so the bar is closed to non-residents during this period. We recommend you check website for exact opening dates and times.

A time-warp Hotel with a Public Bar. which is situated at the rear of the hotel and accessed down the left hand side of the building was added in the 1960s. It is a small room with a modern quarry tiled floor, a dado of fielded panelling, a small counter more like a hatch with a Formica shelf, new cast fireplace, just three small round cast-iron tables, an oblong table and two antique settles. There are outside ladies’ and gents’ toilets (modernised). There is no Real Ale, but the Tirril Blonde is available on keg.

The unspoiled Guest Bar was included on CAMRA's Heritage Pub listings, but access is now restricted.

The bar is currently listed on CAMRA's inventory of important heritage interiors: https://pubheritage.camra.org.uk/pubs/4133
