After making his English-language debut with “The Sisters Brothers,” a period film starring Joaquin Phoenix, John C. Reilly and Jake Gyllenhaal, Audiard returned to France with a daring black-and-white relationship drama co-written by Céline Sciamma (“Portrait of a Lady on Fire”) and Léa Mysius (“Ava”), titled “Paris, 13th District.” Audiard, known for “A Prophet” and Palme d’Or winner “Dheepan,” proved he still has an eye for fresh talent, casting newcomers Lucie Zhang and Makita Samba for the film’s breakthrough lead performances, alongside Noémie Merland. Audiard made his television debut in 2020, picking up directing duties from Eric Rochant on the last two episodes of hit French spy series “The Bureau’s” fifth season on Canal+.
