A bit of Punky Power has come to Tuesday’s news cycle: Universal Content Productions is developing a Punky Brewster sequel series, with Soleil Moon Frye on board to reprise the title role, TVLine has confirmed.
Punky Brewster originally ran from 1984 to 1988 and starred Frye as a young girl growing up with foster father Henry Warnimont. In the potential follow-up series, Punky is now a single mother of three trying to get her life back on track when she meets a young girl who reminds her a lot of her younger self.
Frye will also serve as an executive producer on the project, along with original series creator David Duclon. Steve and Jim Armogida (who worked on Nickelodeon’s School of Rock adaptation) will write the script and serve as EPs.
During its original four-season run, Punky Brewster scored three Emmy nominations, including two for Outstanding Children’s Program. Frye went on to voice Punky in the animated spinoff It’s Punky Brewster, which earned a Daytime Emmy nod of its own.
In the years since the sitcom ended, Frye has done quite a bit of voice work, including roles on Robot Chicken, Bratz and The Proud Family. She also appeared on several seasons of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as Sabrina’s college roommate, Roxie.
Our sister site Deadline was first to report the Punky Brewster news.

Yes! I was hoping it would come back!
I watched this show recently as an adult and I was cracking up. She had had incredible comedic timing for a kid. I’m sure the show will focus on her taking in a young child her, but part of me wants the original format of an old cranky man taking in the bubbly child (however, we would now view that as suspicious. )
I’m just waiting for the Blossom revivial news any moment.
Seriously?! I’m a single mother with 3 kids and I hope you don’t consider me a ho…
I think you may have replied to the wrong comment 😬
Your “ho” comment i believe is related to the one below.
Mis-post*
OMG I AM SO SO SO EXCITED! I own the DVD set and love watching with my 4 year old!
Single mom with three children…sounds like Punky was a Ho…or either Alan have her his seed three times, then died. Poor thing, all these years later, she still can’t catch a break. Hope Cherie and her other friends return, too!
Or she’s a widow. Or divorced….
So a single mother is automatically a “ho”? Wow.
My grandmother was a single mother with three children after my grandfather died. Are you calling my grandmother a ho?
Whatchu say about my Mama?!!! 🤬
Wonder if they’ll be bringing back Henry and her dog, Brandon? ☠️
Given how old Henry was in the original series he would be passed away, besides the actorwho played him has passed away. As far as Brandon goes, given the short lifespan of dogs he too would have passed away. Probably the onky way we might see Henry and Brandon is in flasback.
I am so excited about this!
I’m tired of all these reboots, most of them are not as good as the originals. Examples would be Murphy Brown, The Odd Couple, they were not as good as the originals whether had some of the originals cast or a new cast. Beverly Hills 90210 is going to be a bunch of 40 somethings trying to relive their pasts. The people that will take a look are also in their 40’s or early 50’s, do they want to be reminded that their getting older. I don’t think so.
Well this is a revival not a reboot so in other words it’s a continuation. Odd Couple was a reboot which was a whole new cast so very different and the Beverly Hills series coming up you seem to be misinformed on because their not playing the characters from the show their playing heightened version of themselves. As for Murphy Brown yes it was a poor choice but you fail to mention Roseanne or Will and Grace which both revivals have been hits as well as others such as fuller house, girl meets world and quite honestly if you even want to stretch it to include reboots like you were originally what about MacGyver, Magnum PI, Sabrina, One day at a time, Hawaii 5 0. You may not like them but more often than not they seem to work as others have made it for multiple seasons Beverly Hills 90210, Arrested Development or are renewed currently for at least another year such as Roswell New Mexico, Charmed and seemingly Prison Break.
I remember Punky Brewster. But I love the show. I think this might be a good show for the kids.
Henry Warnimont. Not Warnimon.
What if Punky and Blossom did the show as neighbors of two teen girls in high school. They could have Mary McCormack as their cheerleader coach and Joey Lawrence as a football coach.
You know, I was prepared to rag on this but, upon reflection, I think it’s sweet and I hope it succeeds
Needs more Glomer.
The big question is what will Glomer’s role be in this?
I loved it when it was on before. I think Soleil gonna nail it again. Hopefully the show will make it.
This was my favorite show growing up and I’m happy that it’s coming back.
There must be an Eight is Enough reboot as well somewhere…
Close enough, The Brady Bunch as adults will being on an HGTV program fixing up the home they used at the start of the show to mimic their filming sound stage. They are the most iconic family of the past 50 years.
“Several seasons”? She was on Sabrina the Teenage Witch for three seasons in total.
Several – more than two, but not many!
Yes! Looking forward to seeing it!
Omg!! I’m so excited!!
Another sitcom with three kids troope. Not all families have three or more kids in th US. So much represetation on U.S TV shows, especialy sitcoms.
Yes, that was a very. Good series .My girls who in their 40’s now never missed an episode. I am posiitive my Grandchildren will be tunning in along with me to see the show.
I loved Punky Brewster, so I am actually hoping they DON’T reboot this. Reboots, generally ruin what was perfect in its time, I would rather watch the original on reruns. It was a different time then, it won’t have the same feeling.
It is extremely unlikely that they would REBOOT the series because given how society tends to feel about men and children, a show about a single man in his 60’s taking an 8 year old girl into his care would never be accepted these days.
Absolutely. I have a Punky Brewster folk here that was my daughters. Can’t wait for the sequel
This will be so awesome! This was my favorite kid show when I was younger!! This make me so excited!! Can’t wait!! When will it start being televised??
If the girl playing girl who reminds Punky of her younger self is played by Soliel Moon-Frye’s daughter that would make it a worth watching
If the sequel does go ahead, I hope that they will have a storyline that lets the viewers know if Punky ever got any answers to what happened to her Mum
Very interested in the new Punky Brewster. I used to watch it with my daughter during it’s first run. I hope it will be funny and not about how obnoxious kids are these days. I also hope it won’t become a platform for LBGT (as are most shows now) or politics. We need comedy!!
I am with you Pat. If they bring in any LBTQ stuff I wont be watching it
