One of the all-time greatest arcade racing games from the original PlayStation is headed to the subscription service later this month.
Ridge Racer Type 4 heading to PlayStation Plus Premium

Archetypal arcade driving game Ridge Racer Type 4 is heading to contemporary PlayStation consoles for those with a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription.

Originally released on the first PlayStation in 1998, R4: Ridge Racer Type 4, as it was called in some markets, set the template for a slick, drift-heavy, racing experience – following on from the series’ Japanese arcade cabinet lineage.

Namco’s classic introduced teams and featured a drop-dead gorgeous opening CGI intro, which I have distinct memories of seeing for the first time playing on a demo unit in a retail store.

The addition follows its publisher’s decision to renew Ridge Racer trademarks in 2021 and the release of the PlayStation Portable Ridge Racer 2 for the subscription service in December 2022.

PlayStation Plus Premium provides PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 subscribers to access a library of PlayStation Classics, over and above lower, cheaper, tiers of the service.

Ridge Racer Type 4 will be available for download from 21st March 2023.
