Overview

We will leave Djerba in 4X4, early in the morning. On the road that will take us to Médenine, we will pass in front of the salt lake "Sebkhet el Melah".

The old Ksar of Medenine, is part of all these Berber ksour that we will visit during the day. These are old fortified granaries, in which the Berbers deposited their food reserves.

The Ksar Hadada, also a former Berber attic, famous thanks to George Lucas, who shot scenes from his Star Wars films there.

Then visit the citadel of Guermassa. This ancient fortified village, erected between two hills, the panorama from the top of this village is magnificent.

After lunch, visit of Chenini, a very beautiful unmissable site.
Then return to Djerba.

Chenini

This ancient Berber village is a very beautiful site and also the most visited, located 18 km west of Tataouine, perched on a ridge. You will discover the troglodyte dwellings, built in the rock, the village blends into the color of the rock of the mountain.

The citadel of Guermassa originally housed a rural mountain society. The people who built this type of fortified villages (ksour) in the region are called Jbaliya (People of the mountain). The ksar allowed the Berbers to maintain themselves while establishing customer and protection relationships with the Arab tribes, who arrived in the 11th century with the Hilalian invasions. It is built at the top of the mountain to fulfill several functions: Military, ksar citadel fortress, it protects the village serving as a place of refuge against enemies, observation site in all directions from the village difficult to access. These collective granaries for the use of one or more tribes, it makes it possible to preserve or store in the ghorfas the different crops, wheat, dates, olive oil, etc., over the years. The panorama from the top of the citadel is magnificent.
Medenine

Medenine is a crossroads city and one of the last cities before Ben Gardane and Libya. Next to the new town, there is the old Ksar, it is part of all these Berber ksour that we will visit during the day. These are old fortified granaries, made up of cells in which the Berbers deposited their food reserves.
Ksar Hadada

To the south of Tataouine, Ksar Hadada extends its ghorfas, one-storey cereal granaries. The rounded domes of the roofs, the arched buttresses which support the walls are typical of Berber architecture. Stairs allow you to go from one level to another. Do not hesitate to go up on the terraces to enjoy the surrounding panorama. This place was also used as a setting for the filming of the film "Star Wars". This fortified village was used in 1997 as the setting for the slave quarters of Mos Espa, the mythical village of Anakin Skywalker, the future Darth Vader, in the Star Wars film "The Phantom Menace".
